The 5 Pandya brother kings who jointly ruled were close w a Persian Gulf-origin merchant named Abu Ali who was settled (maybe born) in the realm. He was called the 6th brother. But they fell out. He fled to China, where Kublai set him up w a Korean woman & he stayed until he died

The failed Mongol invasion of N India is well known, but wrongly thought to have exhausted Mongol attempts to rule in the region. When some Yuan envoys landed on the Pandya coast, & requested permission to travel through the realm to reach the other coast, an official referred them to Abu Ali. Ali sent some people to their travel lodge to secretly make them all kinds of BS promises in exchange for asylum

Kublai agreed, but it's not clear why, given the nature of Ali's promises. Some speculate that given his plans to expand his influence in the region through vassalage and trade, he wanted Ali's intimate knowledge of south India, the Indian Ocean coast and trade routes.
