Po Dao (朴刀)
An ornate Po Dao once belonged to Taiping general Luo Da Gang (羅大綱). Private Collection. Po Dao is a type of Chinese sword or glaive with a cleaving blade that usually ends in a very steep clip point. Po Dao comes in one-handed, two-handed, equal handle to blade ratio, polearm and even a "bifurcated weapon" form, although the term generally refers to polearm version in common usage. It should be noted that the weapon's name is written as "朴刀", even in traditional Chinese. It cannot be…

Drawing of a Yan Yue Dao, from 'Chou Hai Tu Bian (《籌海圖編》)'. Yan Yue Dao (偃月刀, lit. 'Reclining moon glaive'), also known as Chun Qiu Da Dao (春秋大刀, lit. 'Spring and autumn great glaive') or simply Da Dao (大刀, lit. 'Great glaive'), is arguably the most iconic Chinese polearm. Due of its association with legendary Chinese general/war deity Guan Yu (關羽), it is also known as Guan Dao (關刀). Yan Yue Dao is very similar to Zhan Ma Dao (斬馬刀) and can be used in pretty much the same manner (as both are…

Drawing of a Gou Qiang, from 'Lian Bing Za Ji (《練兵雜紀》)'. A Gou Qiang (鈎鎗, barbed spear) is a cavalry spear with two to four three small hooks below the spearhead. It measures eight chi five cun in length and weights three catties. Gou Qiang was frequently used by the Mongols, although it was originally a Chinese weapon recorded in Song Dynasty Wu Jing Zong Yao (《武經總要》). It is similar, but distinct, from Gou Lian Qiang (鈎鐮鎗).

Drawing of a Tang Pa, from 'Bing Lu (《兵錄》)'. Tang Pa (鎲鈀) is a Chinese polearm that is somewhat similar to a ranseur. It consists of a spearhead and two crescent-shaped, unsharpened prongs. The spearhead is only slightly longer than the prongs. Tang Pa is actually a compound word of Tang (鎲, trident) and Pa (鈀, rake), two families of similar polearms, and can be used as a catch-all term to describe all of them. Military Tang Pa used in the Ming army was developed from several types militia…

This blog post was originally meant to be part of my 100th post rant, but that one kind of drag on for too long, so I decided to write a separate one. I think I have to apologise beforehand if my tone in this blog post sounds too condescending. I know most illustrators are not historians, and it's very hard to reconstruct a historically accurate illustration with the information (which erred plenty) given to them. With that in mind, I have to say they had done a commendable job bringing the…

Drawing of a Tie Gou Qiang, from 'Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》)'. Despite being called a Qiang (鎗), Tie Gou Qiang (鐵鈎鎗, lit. 'Iron hook spear') is not a spear, but a chopping polearm that combines a cleaver blade and a hook. It is usually used in conjunction with Ai Pai (挨牌). Tie Gou Qiang is very similar to European voulge-guisarme and couteau de brèche. It is not related to Gou Qiang (鈎鎗) or Gou Lian Qiang (鈎鐮鎗), which are actual spears. A replica couteau de brèche that is almost identical to Tie Gou…
