Satella (サテラ) is the Witch of Envy responsible for the Great Calamity 400 years ago who is currently sealed in the Evil Sealing Stone Shrine, located somewhere underneath the Augria Sand Dunes, close to where the Pleiades Watchtower is currently standing. In reality, the Witch of Envy (嫉妬の魔女) is a separate personality that formed when she took in incompatible Witch Factor of Envy. Satella formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character, whilst the Witch serves as an overarching antagonist throughout the series, appearing in most arcs so far, one way or another.
She possesses a yet-unexplained connection to both Subaru and Emilia. Throughout the series, the Witch silences Subaru whenever he attempts to talk about his Authority. Satella herself did not debut until Arc 4, where she and the other Witches helped Subaru accept himself and change his views on Return by Death.
Appearance
Satella, according to legend, is a half-human/half-elf demi-human woman with silver hair and eyes that are amethyst with a bluish tint to them. As a half-elf, Satella's ears are noticeably pointed. When she manifested before Petelgeuse in a realm devoid of light, the details of her face and the shape of her body were both obscured by pitch-black veils made out of mist. The mist that engulfed her form was so impossibly dark that it blotted out the darkness of the realm. In this state, Satella's eyes can be seen glowing brightly in contrast to the rest of her form.
Beyond the shadows that obscure her appearance, Satella wears dark-purple thigh-high socks with golden frills on the top, a dark-purple one-piece mini-dress with golden flower decorations, and a long dark veil that covered a part of her face. Additionally, she also has an earring on her left ear.
When she attacked the Sanctuary in Emilia's body, Satella's form was once again obscured. Although the contours of her body were difficult to ascertain, the shadows surrounding her made her seem as though she wore a dress of darkness and had long raven-black hair. Her voice was muffled to the point that it was difficult to distinguish whether it belonged to a man or a woman.
When Subaru encountered her at Echidna's tea party, she wore a black dress made of shadows that seemed to wave in accordance with her heartbeat. Initially, he was unable to see her face because of a black shadow covering her above her neck, which was created out of his reluctance to accept her, however he later accepts her and becomes able to see her face, mentioning afterward that she looked exactly the same as Emilia.
Personality
Contrary to popular belief, Satella and the Witch of Envy are separate personalities, formed when she took in incompatible Witch Factors. The two personalities tend to fight each other. Both personalities love Subaru, though the Witch of Envy personality is much more aggressive about it, while Satella is much more reasonable and cares deeply about his well-being. Alec Hoshin described Satella as an earnest, reckless, pure, and honest girl.
According to Beatrice, the Witch of Envy was starved for love before her imprisonment. For unknown reasons, the Witch was obsessively in love with Natsuki Subaru, who, to his knowledge, had never met her before in his life. In the shadow world she called home, Satella would simply sit idly and monotonously repeat the words "I love you" over and over again, seemingly swamped by her own obsessive feelings of love towards Subaru. She was incredibly possessive over Subaru, as she wouldn't allow him to tell anyone else the secret of Return by Death. She seemed to have no remorse nor did she pay attention to anyone other than Subaru, as she didn't hesitate to execute Emilia when Subaru told her about Return by Death.
If the secret of Return by Death was revealed to another person, Satella would find a method of bypassing her imprisonment and slaughter all of Subaru's allies in that timeline, presumably as a form of strong reprimand fuelled by her possessiveness. Although she usually paid no heed to the words of anyone including Subaru's, she once took noticeable offence after Subaru told her he preferred the other Witches of Sin over her.
History
In the years predating the Great Calamity, Satella travelled alongside Echidna, Flugel, Reid Astrea, Farsale Lugunica, and Alec Hoshin for unknown reasons, though according to Alec, it was a journey to save the world.
400 years earlier, Satella absorbed the Witch Factor of Envy, which she had no compatibility with, resulting in the creation of her Witch of Envy personality. However, this alternate personality was not the reason for her subsequently going out of control and killing countless innocent people and nearly destroying the world. Despite the efforts of many, including the Dragon, the First Sword Saint, and the Sage, Satella was unable to be killed and was instead sealed in a shrine that was watched over by Shaula until the end of Arc 6. Currently, the Pleiades Watchtower and Evil Sealing Stone Shrine are being watched over by the Divine Dragon itself, Volcanica.
Despite being physically imprisoned near the Great Waterfall, Satella somehow maintains a link to Subaru's body and is constantly aware of his actions, even managing to manifest in the shape of a shadowy figure of varying sizes multiple times throughout the story.
Abilities
Authority of Envy (嫉妬の権能 Shitto no Ken'nō): Satella is able to use the Authority of Envy.
- Although the abilities of the Authority of Envy have yet to be revealed, in the Web Novel, Minerva mentioned during the Witches' Tea Party that Satella might direct her jealousy (妬み Netami) toward her if she stepped in between her and Subaru, suggesting that it's something that affects people remotely. This ability has been removed from the Light Novel, hence should not be considered as canon.
Immortality: One of Satella's most troublesome and dangerous abilities is her seemingly-flawless immortality. Although she could be injured and defeated, Satella's body couldn't be destroyed by any external force. Even the Great Sage Flugel, who was said to be all-knowing, could not conceive a method to bring about Satella's death. Her immortality couldn't be bypassed by even Reid Astrea, the first Sword Saint, Volcanica, the Divine Dragon and Flugel, the aforementioned Great Sage, eventually resulting in her being sealed away, despite it being stated that Reid was stronger than her. It is unknown whether her immortality is part of her Authority of Envy or a completely different ability. By the time of Subaru's summoning, Satella has been alive for over four-hundred years while still sealed, though this inhuman longevity of hers is most likely due to her half-elf blood.
Shadow Control: Satella is able to generate and control shadows on a gargantuan scale, though it's unknown whether this is a part of her Authority of Envy or a completely different ability. They erode or destroy all life and matter around her as well as taking abstract things like thoughts and sometimes even memories and mixing them together. It's also shown that she's capable of manipulating someone's feelings and emotions, amplifying or fabricating them to her own liking.
- Satella is able to create shadow tendrils which she uses to capture, impale and decimate her enemies. The tendrils are strong enough to hold transformed Garfiel in the air and incapacitate him. She is also able to slip the shadows into someone's body through wounds and disperse them outwards, effectively destroying the opponent from the inside out.
- In the instances in which she has appeared even though still sealed, just showing up has caused the entire area she was in, to be completely enveloped in Shadows. After covering the area in Shadows, Witch of Envy then began absorbing everything around her–the more she absorbs the more mass her vortex of shadows gains. During a failed loop in Arc 4, the entire Sanctuary was enveloped in shadow and everyone else had been swallowed by the shadows.
- By creating a veil of shadow over her person, Satella could seemingly nullify physical damage directed at her. Even the mighty blows of Garfiel Tinsel merely dissipated upon making contact with the Witch of Envy.
- In some instances, she can also be seen creating hands from her shadows, similar to the Unseen Hand that came from the Authority of Sloth belonging to Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti. She often used a shadow hand to grip Subaru's heart whenever he spoke about his ability to anyone who isn't her. According to Puck, Satella was capable of manifesting over two-thousand shadow hands at once. She can also make the hands go intangible. According to one passage from chapter 58 of Arc 5's web novel, Satella's shadow/magical hands and the Unseen Hands produced by the Authority of Sloth share the same properties such as being invisible and can phase through objects, but are not the same ability.[1]
Time Manipulation: Though the Witch of Envy has yet been seen to freely manipulate time in her favour apart from stopping time around Subaru whenever he speaks about Return by Death or anything connected to it – though even that isn't confirmed to be thanks to her ability to manipulate time to certain extent – she was the one who gave Subaru his Authority which he named Return By Death (死に戻り, Shinimodori) in order to prevent him from dying. It should also be noted that the Witch of Envy supposedly didn't grant Subaru this ability in order to save his friends, but rather, in order to challenge fate head-on without any restrictions such as death. Furthermore, the true purpose for her granting Subaru his Authority is yet to be explained, and all the information above was only speculated by Echidna in Volume 11.
Magic User (魔法使い, Maho Tsukai): Satella is said to be a user of Yin Magic. According to Beatrice and Julius at the beginning of Arc 7, there was a clump of Yin Magic which was akin to an advanced version of Shamak that was given direction. Beatrize theorizes this clump of magic was attempting to teleport Subaru, Rem and Louis to a different location, but failed. While Subaru was within the shadows of the Yin Magic clump, he heard the Witch of Envy's voice, signaling that she has some sort of connection to it.
Witch's Scent (魔女の香, Majo no Ka): The Evil Sealing Stone Shrine where Satella is sealed is covered in her scent, which is so thick that it distorts everything in one’s view. It invades the minds of anyone it touches, annihilates their flesh, and corrupts their soul. During one of the failed loops of Arc 6, Subaru, Ram, Anastasia and Patrasche fell victim to the Witch's Scent, going mad and killing each other in a bloody spectacle of betrayal.
Possession: During a failed loop of Arc 4, Satella was capable of leaving her seal and possessing Emilia's body so as to physically interact with Subaru. The process which she does this by is unknown. However, it is noted that the Evil Sealing Stone Shrine that serves as Satella's prison is unable to completely seal her due to reasons currently unknown, and is constantly surrounded by a lethal miasma and in one loop, she successfully escaped upon sensing Subaru was in the vicinity.
Great Power: In her era, Satella was one of the most powerful people alive whose defeat could only be attained by the combined efforts of the strongest heroes of the time. Among the Witches of Sin who were reviled by the world, Satella was easily the mightiest. She was able to swallow up half of the world and was said to eclipse the might of all of the other Witches combined. If not for the interference of the Sage, the Divine Dragon, and the Sage's apprentice, Satella would have overwhelmed and defeated the first Sword Saint, despite the Sword Saint being stronger than her in terms of pure damage output. Even within the modern era, the Witch remains almost completely unrivalled. The only two individuals who are said to counter Satella in some form are the current generation's Sword Saint, Reinhard van Astrea, and his legendary ancestor Reid Astrea, who contributed to her defeat four hundred years ago. According to the author, if Satella and Reinhard were to fight, it would end in a stalemate as she wouldn't be able to land a finishing blow whereas Reinhard couldn't bypass her immortality.
Trivia
- According to the author, the meaning of Satella's name will be revealed in the final arc.[2]
- According to the author, Satella lacks common sense, and the situation is so serious that her dictionary doesn't even have the word common sense.
- In the anime, Satella received a redesign by Otsuka Shinichirou.
- The author once stated that Satella is the second tallest of the witches.
- Although Beatrice and Echidna initially stated that she (Echidna) and the other five witches were all killed by the Witch of Envy and "used them as sustenance", it is later revealed that their deaths, with the exception of Minerva, were supposedly uninvolved with the Witch of Envy. It is currently unknown if the Witch of Envy was actually involved with the other five witches' deaths in any way.
- It is heavily implied that Satella is the one who summoned Subaru to the world of Re:Zero.
- Satella is the only Witch of Sin who wasn't succeeded by a Sin Archbishop (except for Pandora and Hector). This was likely because, unlike the other Witches, Satella didn't perish, meaning her Witch Factor wasn't inherited by anyone.
- Subaru has said the exact same phrase he said to Emilia in episode 1, to Satella at the end of the tea party, with the exact phrase being "I will save you no matter what". In Japanese:-『俺が、必ず――お前を、救ってみせる。』.
- In the latest IF chapter commonly referred to as Mimigau IF, Satella makes an appearance as a male silver haired half-elf named Luna (ルナ) and he is known as the Warlock of Envy (嫉妬の魔人 Shitto no Majin).

Just to ask the faithful fans of the series.
Is Satella's name based on "Satellite"?
This is what I've picked up based on the article above and based on how our satellite - the Moon - works.
Assuming this is true and let's say Subaru is the Earth that the moon revolves around.
A. The Moon constantly revolving around the Earth is essentially Satella's unending love for Subaru.
B. The Moon has phases, which is reflected the varied persona of Satella and the Witch of Envy.
C. The Moon symbolizes the shift between night and day, which reflects to Subaru's "return by death".
D. The Moon that the Earth has is just one. It may be unthinkable for us to have two in our world - similar to how Satella/The Witch of Envy may think it to be unthinkable that Subaru would love another or someone else would love him.
It's likely referring to "Satellite" in the sense of the Moon. In Mimagau IF, Satella's name is changed to Luna, illustrating a connection to it. The name Natsuki Subaru (菜月 昴) also literally means "Vegetable Moon Pleiades", so it seems like there's some intention behind connecting both Subaru and Satella's names to the Moon.
I see. Based on what you mentioned, Subaru and Satella are more directly linked that I thought - especially with how the Witch of Envy literally has the grip of Subaru's heart.
Thank you for the insight.
Best girl. Best character.
And if Reinhard couldn't defeat her, then by definition he's not more powerful than her, they're tied. And Reid isn't even in the equation.
"he's not more powerful than her, they're tied"
Reinhard is more powerful than Satella actually--He's just unable to kill the deathless being.
"Best girl"
Oh! Yes! I totally agree with that and I like the idea of Subaru and Satella ending up together in the end. But sadly, she is not that popular among re zero fans.
When Reinhard can stop and rewind time at will, create alternate dimensions, possess dominion over life and death, and more, let me know. They're tied. The duality makes for a better story.
The time manipulation thing-y only happens to Subaru, whether she can use it in a battle is yet to be seen. And I didn't know that a story would only be good if there were two powerful characters in it.
It'd be better than only having one all-powerful being. Reinhard and Satella can naturally keep each other in check.
"According to one passage from chapter 58 of Arc 5's web novel, Satella's shadow/magical hands and the Unseen Hands produced by the Authority of Sloth share the same properties such as being invisible and can phase through objects, but are not the same ability"
I don't know if I am misinterpreting the passage used for this information, but chapter 58 never says Satella's shadow hands are invisible, only that they can phase through objects. It was to my knowledge that the shadow hands were made of the same magic that the rest of the shadow tendrils and stuff were, which weren't invisible. The only reason why no one sees the hands when they squeeze Subaru's heart was because it was in stopped time I thought. You may correct me if I am wrong.
Theory: Emilia was raised to be the 'ideal vessel' for satella's spirit to inhabit.
Contributing to this theory are the events Season 2 Episode 11. It's clear that it isn't Emilia inside, though it isn't stated. It appears to be the only condition is Emilia's mind breaking
Also both the isolation treatment the dialogue between Fortuna and Geise during Emilia's trial seem to point to it.
Hopefully it's eventually revealed
For some reason, I would want for her to get existentially be [wrecked] by a 'single' [Pyramid(s)].
But [IT] wouldn't just Stop at a being like Satella there....so....
On the bright side, Pandora would be Easily also get Stamped out. or worse be [Taken]. er....
Tbh pandora seems more OP
And did you atleast assume that their was a limit to her Vanity Authority? We don't know that yet.
It depends on how you view this "OP". In terms of destructibility, she likely isn't. However, in terms of being manipulative, it is likely that she's better.
I read many theories on this comment section but 60 % of the theories believe that Emilia is satella but just think guys
The main topic of re-zero is TIME TRAVEL and of course there many rules when you say time travel and one of the most important is TIME PARADOX.
So here is my many theories from watching and reading re zero
EMILIA is just another vessel for witch of envy to get out from her prison. because of that emilia share same memory from her main clone.
Subaru is flugel that come into re zero world but not like our protagonist there no emilia, and rbd is subaru own skill that he get from "whatever" and when he using rbd, this subaru Thrown to past and meet satella when she is still slave.
Satella is emilia aunt or something like that.
Emilia is key for satella or witch of envy to get out. but the question is why emilia is the key ? probably because share half satella soul, power, etc
Witch of envy separating her souls, power,or something inside her before get sealed, and that half souls, power, become emilia ?
Well what do you think ? i have many theories about this but but lazy to write so long
6. They share the same seiyuu
Complex plots can be written.
For example, a previous people are the cause. Satella could have a crush in a man of the past, who loves another woman. Unable to fulfill her love, and full of envy of that woman, she absorbed the witch factor of envy.
But her love and her envy created an incompatibility and in certain sense, she split in two. Satella, a jeaously loving woman and the Witch of envy, a dark envy entity drove by a mad love.
She tried to use her powers to subjugate the man, and kill the woman, but he committed suicide, ending tragically.
Satella/Envy worked to bring more and more powers, trying to recapture the soul of the man, but that soul was drifted beyond her world and that was impossible by normal means.
She was instead success recovering the woman soul, so she planned a way to retake the man.
First, put the woman soul into a copy of her body (Emilia), and later perform an invocation ritual to bring the man to his beloved, so that way the man could be transferred to her world. The plan was possess the copy later, after the man loved the woman again, and take her place.
But a unexpected event arose and Emilia was on sleep for a long time.
After she recovered, Satella restarted the plan, and Subaru was invocated to the world. To prevent the same result of the first time, she fixed the man soul to specific events, so in case of die, he would be transferred to that event.
Most of the time, we see that as "time rewind" but an alternate possibility is just be transferred to an alternated timeline (while the remain abandoned timeline by Subaru soul also exists). So, that couldn't work as a generic time travel, just avoid the soul to escape through death, so she ensure the plan will work sooner or later.
Get some grammar lessons, weeb.
No tru
About this thing "If the secret of Return by Death was revealed to another person, Satella would find a method of bypassing her imprisonment and slaughter all of Subaru's allies in that timeline, presumably as a form of strong reprimand fuelled by her possessiveness" where did it mention it? in ln wn or Q&A? because i dont remember that it have written in ln may be
I have a feeling Satella's miasma would smell like burnt toast and squid.
Future Emilia who turned back time to change history and save Subaru?
Pretty sure Satella know what is going to happen in the future and trying to change his fate by having him to kill her.
Pretty sure the Witch of Envy would do anything to make it difficult for Subaru to do that and the outcome would still be the same. Then Emilia will...
Satella names similar Chrono Crusader Satella Harvenheit.
Wait if satella losses his immortality and fight cecil who would wins?
Well i my opinion no cecil will win
She destroyed half of the world. We dont have too many feats of Cecilus.
His?
Cecilus kinda got chance in this situation. In terms of pure stats he is comparable to Reinhard, which is enough to clap Satella. Its situative, though. Cecilus still can lose due to timestop.
> We don't have too many feats for Cecilus.
In 4 EX its stated that even young Cecilus was able to win against country worth of warriors.
Also, being comparable in stats to Reinhard isn't enough?
Where is it that Beatrice said that Satella used Yin magic
Arc 7 Chapter 1
Thank you
In arc 6 Subaru said he need mouth and tongue to talk with Light/Shadow of love, Which means: Sloth is hand, Greed is Heart and Gluttony is mouth/Tongue, I guess Pride is head, Envy is Eye, Wrath is Torso/Body and Lust is Skin or lower body. is it like that? or did i miss something?
Looks right I think
If she is the future Emilia, then the protagonist Emilia will end up being alone in the future(Subaru left her).
Tappei recently said Subaru and Emilia will, eventually, get canonically married and even have a child at some point throughout the course of the story.
@AiriMage I would like to see where he said that, that I know of so far when he was asked if Emilia and Subaru would get married, he only said that the anime would have a happy ending, but nothing explicit
And I would find it quite meh if he admitted that ending, it would honestly take away the emotion of the series
@Wonejo34 It was either within the 10th anniversary Q&A or the Emilia (2) Q&A I believe. It’s been months since I posted that reply though so I’m not 100% sure anymore. Also, with the way Tappei writ it, it didn’t seem like a “end of series” thing but something that he plans to happen in the middle, like arc 9-10 area, with 11 being the final arc of the series ofc.
Well, regardless of whether it's part of the series finale or not, I feel like it takes away some of the suspense that was attached to this about who Subaru would marry.
But it's the author's decision, we just have to see if it's 100% true.
Although from what I found, it never says that it will be in the main route, maybe it will be in some IF (similar to Rem).
Personally, despite being #TeamRem I think that Subaru in the end would not stay with any as a wife, I just think he will stay with both but in a deep friendship and being happy, it would be a miracle for me as TeamRem to stay with Rem, but being honest the probability is low.
I love Satella and Emilia !
or just type "I love Emilia".
EMT
Does satella say Subaru-kun? Or just Subaru or has she ever said his name before?
In the anime, when everything's being consumed, she calls him Subaru-kun only for him to react harshly. I do think she has said his name a few times other than that in the novels, but not much were coherent. Just your typical "Subarusubarusubarusubarusubarusbuarubabububa........"
So that means, Satella can't be future Emilia since Emilia doesn't say -kun to anyone even though future Emilia makes no sense lol
> Satella can't be future Emilia since Emilia doesn't say -kun
Why can't she be? She most likely would learn that from Subaru, the only Japanese person in the cast.
No report, several people use Japanese honorifics in the series. Emilia and Satella call Subaru differently...
@Poytaytoy i've smelled the blood of the last person i killed...
How does it smell like?
Like blood
Specifically, a dead person's blood
One who was recently living
I wonder what the witch's miasma smells like, maybe burnt squid and bread?
According to Rem, it smells like blood and murder so we're just going to have to assume that it smells like blood.
I wish the author would tell us how Subaru killed Emilia in Gluttony IF cause that seems so sadistically interesting. >:) After all, we've never seen Emilia being physically tortured brutally and said the words of her dying breath. Too bad, the author loves his heroine too much for that.
It's not weird. But you can make it weird.
@Black Reaper Sasaki And he did it
What obvious attention whoring... smh.
I wouldn't call it attention whoring.... That type of topic wouldn't really make you famous or anything... It's just meant for a laugh and that's all.
