Sometimes that circle-shaped diacritic also had to do double(+) duty in the same text -- as here in the Kotoba no shinga 詞葉新雅 (1792) @ kokusho.nijl.ac.jp/biblio/2000187 with イツﾟパイ for ippai 'full'.

(And its duties only increased in kana renderings of other languages ...)
