The San Rafael City Schools recently won a $160,000 federal grant to offer Mandarin instruction to elementary and middle school students. The district has been offering Mandarin at San Rafael and Terra Linda high schools since 1997.

Sun Valley Elementary School students now have the opportunity to study Mandarin and Chinese culture in an after-school program. Beginning next fall, Mandarin will be part of Sun Valley's regular curriculum and expanded to Davidson Middle School.
