This awareness of the script in the 16th c. (your Wang Shizhen example) and 19th c. (Bushell), makes it all the more surprising that Qianlong and his advisers in the 18th c. did not identify the script in that jade cup you posted previously.
Yes, but even Bushell misidentified the fish tally inscription as 'large Jurchen' ...
If Qianlong had followed Bushell's reasoning he might have realised that the cup inscription matched the text of the 金皇弟都統經略郎君行記 inscription dated 1134 on the 無字碑 stele at the Qianling 乾陵 Mausoleum in Shaanxi, and so also wrongly conclude that it was Jurchen.

That *would* have been interesting. But I mean...not even to conjecture that it might be related to any of these scripts, and instead to reach the conviction that it was a frivolous Chinese-character-splitting riddle is just astonishing. To my mind, anyway.
