is this because people got so used to speaking in Japanese during the occupation that they struggled the find the right word to express equivalent ideas in Korean?

Not speaking, but writing. It can be hard to determine if the colloquial expressions you use in daily life is also okay to use in formal documents as well, especially in Korean, where the style of language used in formal documents were so different from the colloquial language.
