Revising ‘A4 Clear Folder Face Shield’

ver 1.2: Added a minimum vent on the center to prevent the shield fogged up by breathing.

After having an opportunity to learn about the situation of those working in the medical field for the treatment of COVID-19 infections I been thinking about what I can do to help. In medical and nursing care settings, there has been getting a noticeable shortage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) stock, and the supply is becoming unstable. The shortage of medical masks is well known, but there will also be a shortage of medical goggles and face shields in time.

Based on the idea of an A4 clear folder already published on the web, I came up with a revised face shield design that is expected to be easier to use.

You can make a face shield easily by downloading and printing the attached PDF. Use it as needed. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ti9s4HhMe89mKXtSuvJex4QtTQQbfNaN

Features including: - completed with only a clear folder (a highly transparent one), scissors, and printed A4 paper. - protects against micro-splashes from the front, sides and top of the head. - Easy to see the flat front field. Prevent from unwanted reflections. Provides more your natural look for patients. - Provide comfortable wearing by ridged structure.

Background.

I heard from professionals in the medical field about the current situation and the challenges they face, and here are some of the things that caught my attention:

Therefore, I thought that by providing a substitute for PPE, we would be able to continue our work and provide a mental sense of security that a substitute was available.

Already, ideas for face shield alternatives have been published on the web and elsewhere. There can be two main types.

1. Ideas that can be produced using only familiar off-the-shelf products

Making face shield alternatives with familiar stationery goods at hand. Since it can be tried some ideas with thing close at hand, and anyone can start to think about it, there are already ideas in diverse approaches presented on internet. It is nice to see some designers contributions, too.

Examples: - Tokujin Yoshioka, “Easy-to-make FACE SHIELD - PADAID “A4 Clear Folder Face Shield “designed by NOSIGNER: - Dr Zoe Laughlin, Institute of Making, University College London “DIY Face Siled

2. Ideas that can be produced in conjunction with special products, etc.

Making an alternatives with special parts produced by such as 3D printers or other production methods and things at hand. Higher precision can be expected, but on the other hand, there are significant issues of the availability of the 3D printers and distribution of the parts.

Example: - A face shield against coronavirus made with a 3D printer and a clear file” by Seiichi Nakajima et al. of Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine

The first approach is considered because of the accessibility for users.

I also have heard from medial professionals that they already started to try covering a A4 clear folders on his face for shielding face in experiment and concluded with the impression “the bi-folded shape of the clear folder remains on my face, and it is difficult to see the front.”

Development

Found the “PANDAID A4 Clear File Foler Face Shield” with has been published having the following features:

However, there are findings during wearing the A4 clear folder face shield:

Therefore, I am proposing this revised version after changes in major and minor parts yet remaining good features in the original PADAID A4 Clear Folder Face Shield.

Note: There is only A4 version is available, and the Letter size version will be developed soon.
