Oolite Windows Nightly
Oolite 1.90
The Oolite development team is pleased to bring you the new stable release of Oolite, tagged 1.90. The game is available for download from the Oolite website. Windows, Linux (64/32 bit) and OS X (64 bit only) ports are available.
This release brings a much improved graphics environment, with special attention paid to planets. Atmosphere appearance on planets is now configurable and custom planets now support normal, gloss and illumination maps. Further graphics improvements include filmic tone mapping, Oren-Nayar diffuse light model, increased light source radiance for better visibility of objects in space and more. Additionally, weapons now have individual sounds assigned to them, while scripts have even more properties available for access.
As always, stability has also been further improved, with plenty of bugs from the previous version fixed. For the full log of changes, please refer to the version 1.90 changelog or the What's New page at Oolite's website.
Enough with the talking though; now it's your turn. Here is a starship and a universe. Go out there and build your legend in the spacelanes. Fly safe, Commander!
Oolite 1.88
We are pleased to announce the release of Oolite 1.88. The game can be downloaded from the Oolite website, where versions for 64/32bit Windows and Linux as well as 64bit OS X are available.
This release significantly revamps Oolite graphics and lighting system. Modern lighting techniques have been deployed, applying physically accurate and energy conserving models for specular reflections on both ships and planets. Visual effect entities can now utilize transparency while the planet atmospheres have received an eye-catching makeover as well. This fusion of physically based rendering techniques and effects produces spectacular Oolite visuals that have never looked better. The new lighting system also works in favor of Oolite's materials system, enabling the creation and usage of materials not possible before.
Furthermore, new features have been added in this version, such as the increase of the maximum number of supported joysticks to four, mouse control improvements, battle AI enhancements, additional game-engine properties made available for scripting expansions and more. As always, several bugs identified in previous releases have been fixed and optimizations have been made to ensure even better game stability.
The improvements delivered with version 1.88 are developed with one thing in mind; to offer you the best Oolite gaming experience to date. Feel free to browse the 1.88 changelog, listing all the changes since the previous release in detail, or visit the What's New page at Oolite's website for more information.
Enjoy the game, Commanders, and... fly safe!
Oolite 1.86
The Oolite Dev Team is pleased to announce the release of the new stable version of Oolite, tagged v1.86. The game can be downloaded from the Oolite website, with versions for 32/64-bit Windows and Linux and 64-bit OS X being available.
In this version we have improved significantly the look of planets by adding shader-based atmosphere scattering effects, deploying a new terrain generation algorithm for more realistic looking land sections, bringing back the cloud layers and adjusting ambient lighting for an overall more aesthetically pleasing result. This is the main feature in this release but certainly not the only one. The maximum resolution the game can support has been increased to 8K UHD levels. We improved heavily on the HUD and UI customization options to enable HUD designs previously not achievable. Furthermore, following player feedback about the difficulty of the game in its early stages, we added an Easy Start scenario which can be a preferred option for those commanders who struggled to get their Lave based MkIII combat-ready.
As always with a new release, there has been a number of stability and gameplay fixes and various other features for further enhancing the gameplay experience. Those include but are not limited to, high-DPI support on Windows, ability to load expansion packs over HTTPS, ability to use the mouse wheel for speed control when piloting your ship using a mouse (Windows / Linux), ability to launch the game in silent mode and more. If you would like to get more detailed information about the new feature set, please refer to our What's New page in the Oolite website and the full changelog listing all the changes since the last stable version.
This particular release has received significant input for its features from the Oolite community, both in form of suggestions and code submissions. We are grateful for your support and thrilled by the drive and dedication of this community. We hope and expect that Oolite v1.86 will offer an equally thrilling gaming experience in return.
Thank you and enjoy the game!
Oolite 1.84

In v1.84 we have added a number of new features, the main ones being the option of multiple laser mounts for all ships, an extension to the external views system which enables the use of a free-roaming camera, improvements to the Galactic Chart user interface to enable quicker and easier retrieval of system information, addition of new Javascript methods and properties, as well as some lighting and engine related improvements. As always, we have fixed a good number of reported bugs too and are confident that this version will offer a solid and satisfying gaming experience. Once again, we would like to wholeheartedly thank the Oolite community for your feedback, ideas, input and restless testing during the development of the new stable version. The game would have been nowhere near where it is now without you. It really is exciting seeing Oolite being developed as a team effort, with your participation and enthusiasm being a very significant part of the process. We hope you will enjoy the result of this collaboration and we are looking forward to your feedback.
Safe flights, commanders.
Upgrade notes
If you are upgrading from a previous version:
- Make sure you remove the OXP version of an expansion pack before installing the OXZ version either manually or through the built-in manager. Oolite cannot automatically detect that an old OXP is the same as a new OXZ.
- Note that the keyconfig entries have changed. If you have customised your keys, you may need to add five more keys to it. If you are using the default keys, dump cargo is now 'shift-D', not just 'd', and the num pad arrows are now bound separately to the normal arrows.
- A few OXPs may not work as expected in 1.80 without upgrading them to the latest version, or applying a workaround. See advice on upgrading existing installations for more details. Replacement shipset OXPs and HUD OXPs may need particular attention.
