Today we’re basking in this vast and vibrant painting by Gillian Ayres RA. Sharing its title with a type of tree, ‘Salix’ bursts with botanical energy. Ayres, however, insisted she was a purely abstract painter- saying her titles were arbitrary. Image caption in alt text
