I was literally walking to the cashier to buy it and just randomly opened to the very front and read it. I immediately turned around and put it back 🥲

I’m sorry you encountered this and I want you to know that a majority of authors would never put this verbiage in their books and we love for readers to gift or donate our work to others.

This is clearly something the publisher added. They are the ones that benefit most from these sales. Most authors do not earn out their advance. I hope you don't let this predatory crap keep you from enjoying this author's work. It's not like they can ever enforce this.

hi! sooo a lot of writers/authors in here have discussed that these authors are self published (as so they say!). I think I’ll borrow this book from someone if I decide to pick it up!

Smashwords used to require this language in order to use their distribution service (and still does if you follow their style book). It's not always up to the author or publisher.

Have you ever seen this before? One of life’s joys is lending your favourite book to a mate and secretly hoping they give it back and don’t touch the pages with food fingers! Stories are to be shared. Keeping an author’s stories alive by sharing is giving it wings.

Maybe it is the publisher. My would say —if you are borrowing stealing or trading this book thank you the fact that you will get it any way you can is such an honor!!!
