Marie (Narration) Dear Diary,
This morning, Mom was reading a newspaper.
What are you reading about, Mom?
It’s an article about the Ogasawara islands. A volcano erupted there in 2021 and made new islands.
The volcano blew up? Boom!
Yes, but we usually say it erupted, not it blew up.
Okay.
Mount Fuji is also a volcano. Some people say it may erupt soon.
Is that true?
Will Mount Fuji erupt anytime soon? I went to a science museum to find out more. I asked a specialist.
It has been 300 years since Mount Fuji last erupted.
That’s a long time ago!
A lot of ash came out with the eruption. It’s said, with that ash you could fill Tokyo Dome Stadium 565 times!
Unbelievable! But Mount Fuji has been quiet for 300 years. It has probably stopped erupting.
I’m afraid not. It’s a long sleep for Mount Fuji, but it’s still an active volcano. Mount Fuji may really erupt at any time.
Oh, no! If it erupts again, what will happen?
Well, the ash can go up more than 10,000 meters in the sky. The winds above Japan always blow to the east, so the ash will reach Tokyo and nearby areas within a few hours.
Is that bad?
Yes. Scientists say that 0.5 millimeters of ash on the ground will stop all trains. If 1 millimeter of ash falls, you can’t see the lines on the roads. That means you can’t drive cars safely. If there is 3 millimeters of ash, water and electricity will stop. We will be in big trouble.
What should I do?
We can’t stop a volcano. That’s nature. And there are about 110 volcanoes in Japan.
I didn’t know we had so many volcanoes!
There is a line of volcanoes surrounding the Pacific Ocean. It’s called the Ring of Fire. About 80 percent of the world’s volcanoes are there. Japan is right in the middle of that.
That sounds so scary. I want to live in a country with no volcanoes!
There are good things about having volcanoes. We’re using the heat from volcanoes’ underground magma in many ways. Hot springs are one example. We also make electricity using the heat.
Oh, I know that. Our teacher said it’s eco-friendly!
That’s right. Volcanoes have good points and bad points. We should learn to live with them.

I’m still a little afraid, but I’m glad I learned about volcanoes. I’m going to check our emergency goods with Mom and
Dad so we can be prepared for eruptions!

Marie (Narration):
親愛なる日記さんへ。今朝私のお母さんは新聞を読んでいました。
Marie:
お母さん、何を読んでいるの？
Mother:
小笠原諸島の記事。 2021年に火山が噴火して、新しい島が出来た。
Marie:
火山が爆発したの？ばーん。
Mother:
うんそうよ。でも普通はそれを噴火っていうの。爆発じゃなくてね。
Marie:
わかった。
Mother:
富士山も火山なのよ。富士山は近く噴火するっていう人もいるのよ。
Marie:
ほんとう？
Marie (Narration):
すぐにでも富士山が噴火する？わたしはもっと知るために科学博物館へいきました。わたしは専門家の人にききました。
Specialist:
富士山の最後の噴火から、 300年が経ちました。
Marie:
それはとても昔のこと。
Specialist:
噴火による大量の火山灰が発生しました。その火山灰は、東京ドームの565倍を埋め尽くすことができる量だと言われています。
Marie:
信じられない。でも、富士山は300年間、静かにしています。噴火はおわったんじゃないでしょうか。
Specialist: 私は恐らく終わっては無いと考えます。それは富士山の長い休眠期間ですが、富士山は未だ活火山です。富士山は実際、いつ噴火するかも知れません。
Marie:
わあ、こわい。もしまた噴火したら、何が起こりますか？
Specialist:
はい、火山灰が10000メートル以上上空に噴き上がる可能性が在ります。日本上空の風は常に東向きに吹いていますから、火山灰は数時間で東京近郊地域に到着するでしょう。
Marie:
それは悪いことですか？
Specialist:
ええ。 0.5ミリの火山灰が地上に積もると、全ての電車が停車するだろうと、科学者は言います。もし 1.0 ミリの火山灰が降下すると、道路上の線が見えなくなります。これが意味するのは、乗用車の運転手は安全に運転することができないということです。もし 3.0 ミリの火山灰が存在したなら、水道と電気は止まります。我々は大混乱の中になることでしょう。
Marie:
私達はどうするべきですか？
Specialist:
我々は火山を止めることは出来ません。それは自然のことです。そして、日本には約110の活火山が存在します。
Marie:
私は、そんなに多くの火山が日本にあるって知らなかった。
Specialist:
太平洋を囲う火山群のひとつの線があります。それは環太平洋火山帯と呼ばれています。世界の火山の内、約80パーセントがそこにあります。日本はまさに、その真ん中にあるのです。
Marie:それはとてもこわい。わたし、火山のない国にくらしたい!
Specialist:
火山があることで、いい話もありますよ。私たちは様々な方法で、地下にある火山のマグマからくる熱を利用しています。温泉は一つの例ですね。私たちはその熱を利用して発電もしています。
Marie:
あー、それ私、知ってます。わたしたちの先生は、それはエコフレンドリーだって言ってました。
Specialist:
そうですね。火山は良い面と悪い面を持っています。私たちは火山と共に暮らすということを学ぶべきです。
Marie (Narration):
わたしはまだすこしこわいけれど、火山についてのことを学べてよかったです。ふんかしても大丈夫なように、わたしたちの避難用具をおとうさんおかあさんと一緒にチェックするつもりです。
