This seems surreal, honestly… to have DPreview closed this way is absurd to me… if we narrow it down to a business decision, it feels cheap…
Anyway, I have to say that DPreview was my go to site for camera reviews. You guys are excellent and do an amazing job. You have a ton of useful information here that helped me a lot developing my photography. On top of that, the community here was amazing!
What you guys had here was impressive, from the site layout to the photography challenges. I had a lot of fun geeking out on all the gadgets reviews here. Now… where am I gonna go?…
I wish all of you the best!
Take care!

Maybe Amazon shouldn't be allowed to use copyright to take all the content of Dpreview down and keep it away from the public. Copyright was created by the govt to reward authors, and benefit the public by rewarding creation of content. It's only about 150 years old. It's hard to see how keeping content away from the public benefits them. Maybe Amazon should have to make available the content at cost plus a reasonable profit.
This is also relevant to Disney's practice of withdrawing movies from circulation to keep up prices. Its the principal of use it or lose it.

So Amazon is doing just like Google... buying companies to then drop them after a while....

I didn't know that they bought Dpreview at all....

It's crazy to anticipate this decision as the end of a part of my own story. Since the early begin in the digital photography, it was no one week without looking to the best comparison site with the most clever tools ever created to help all my decisions in purchasing process but not only. To imagine that all this patrimony will disappear in the wind with a simple click is very hard to me and feel like very cynical view of this business in the hands of the highest richest guy on earth.

Jeff Bezos no longer runs Amazon and had literally no input on this decision. He may be an easy one to scapegoat but had no hand in this. He probably doesn't even know about this.

Also, it's a more minor point but right now he is not currently the "richest guy on earth." That title tends to fluctuate based on fluctuations in the stock market. But yes, he is very very rich.

Shattered to learn of this. Dpreview has been my goto for Camera and photography info from its inception. Dismayed at the parent company's decision to close down such a valuable resource! Thanks for all the times you kept me informed on anything Camera related. Been on here that long my original email address has long been defunct, had to register again to give my opinion on the sad news!

Like others, I too am very saddened by the announcement to shut DPR down.

For me, its biggest value over the years has been the collective knowledge, experience and wisdom of all its editors, contributors and thousands of forum participants. The 2+ decades of its accumulated knowledge base is irreplaceable.

Thus, my plea and suggestion: after DPR closes, could its entire site content by frozen, archived and made permanently available for passive access and search? It would be a nice and generous gesture from Amazon that would atone for their harsh decision and perhaps mend its relationship with the devastated DPR community.

"Nice and generous" will not be found in the Amazon corporate mission statements.

Depressed in the way of losing a friend who you just knew was there, whenever you need them. Always there for advice, information, and comforting answers to posed questions. Amazon I cannot stop using your services but know that I am very annoyed, That was not the word I chose but I was not allowed to post, pi**ed.

This rises questions on the fairness of the rights of ownership in our world. Is it fair that an owner has the right to destroy his property anytime and anyhow he wants? When you demolish a building you must ask for a permit from the local administration and you may not be allowed to do it if the demolition endangers the people in the surrounding neighborhood or if the building is of cultural importance for the community. Why on earth should it be different with owning anything else than buildings? If I own a Rembrandt and I want to burn it nothing stops me. How fair is it? How fair is it that Amazon can kill this site in spite of its importance for the community and despite the contribution of the community in making it what it is?

This has probably been asked, but is there way for us to download content for specific forums for specific cameras? There is so much valuable information here?

I feel I'm losing an old friend as I've followed this fabulous/informative site since it's beginning. No clue how the staff and industry must feel with the loss as it's always been the "go to" website of the world. I never posted much but it was my daily website to visit numerous times daily. Now it turns into "The Twilight Zone" a figment of our imagination...such a sad loss for everyone.

This is beyond sad. Technically, Amazon owns it and can do what it wants with its property. But with great power comes great responsibility, and they just showed they do not care about anything apart from profit. DPR holds 25 years of specific part of our culture and technical development and it's going down the drain. Good part will be saved by Archive team and other independent archivers but this should not be necessary.

Absolutely shocking.

Was a great resource for equipment reviews, and I bought much of my past and current kit based on these reviews.

Sad for the industry, ever sadder for the staff.

While the forums have been good to delve into, I wont miss the banal questions and nit-picking comments from some.

What does stink is the decision by Amazon. They can go stuff themselves now.

Sad day for photography as a profession, hobby or even as an industry. Can’t believe this site can’t be run in a profitable way.

I'm sure it could be, but Amazon doesn't want to make the effort.

Well - I'll spend less time on forums and that's probably good; wait - not probably.

I won't miss the rancor. It got increasingly ridiculous really; I'll even admit I was part of some mud wrestling. Being a Nikon shooter, I won't miss the Nikon bashing, even if partly deserved. I won't miss the bashing of anything ... maybe it's time to return to a quieter world.

Hogan has some pretty pithy things to say about DPR ... basically when "everyone" has a voice, the general discourse drifts to the mean - or- as George Carlin used to rant, “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” We are suffering thru an age where everyone has a soap box and unfortunately uses it.

I'll miss the written reviews ... and the general news crawl.

I'll miss the white on black text.

Yeah, feel the same way, stopped going to the forums years ago, will miss the reviews and the home page with the latest cameras and lenses just to see what other platforms other than what I use are up to, forums can be found on other sites such as Fred Miranda but the news crawl and reviews are going to be the main things I’ll miss.

Every time I will watch “The secret life of Walter Mitty” in the future, I’ll see the analogy with the destruction of this community.

Wow. My whole photography experience is linked to this site. Equipment reviews and forum posts from so many experienced photographers sharing their knowledge.
Really irreplaceable.

What M! You will simply end up with the best photo equipment site. It has been the home page on my computers since the year 2000. I am against the solution of reducing posts to stay alive. In the future she should repeat this procedure. It's the easiest, people are a number. Now I will think twice before buying from AMAZON.

Maybe Mr Askey can try to buy the site back? It's his legacy after all. I'm sure many readers here could help.

I made this acct just to post a comment about this. This is why perhaps companies should avoid selling to Amazon?!? This just depresses me even further about the loss of quality information, historical information, and also the gatekeeping that is also getting so much worse. I'm ashamed to be a customer of Amazon, and wish I knew how we can stop this from taking this information right out of the world. Except probably for those that are connected to Mr B:((
