History is so different from what most people think it is. It's endlessly frustrating how prevalent ideas that are merely centuries-old propaganda are in the general population. How much of the bad decisions people make in the present are the result of misunderstanding history?

1.) Chistopher Columbus is villainized not just because of the long-term affects of his arrival in the Caribbean, but because he personally murdered, mutilated, robbed, enslaved, raped, and committed genocide against the Taino of the Hispaniola colony he founded.

2.) Gunpowder wasn't invented in China & then "only used for fireworks." Of course a material for blowing stuff up was used in war. Medieval Chinese armies has canons, firearms, grenades, and even rocket launchers. By the 1700s European guns were better, but they weren't first.

3.) Athens invented democracy, but they weren't the only ones. Systems of government where large numbers of people get a vote on who is in charge can be found in every corner of the world, including places in Europe outside Greece. Pictured is a Tlaxcallan elected official.

Bartering (cows for wheat, for example) was never the most common form of commerce anywhere. What if you need wheat but not a whole cow's worth? Before currency in the Ancient Near East, debt was the most common exchange- ie, give me wheat now & I'll owe you a cow eventually.

5.) Columbus didn't need to convince anyone the Earth was round. It was a well-known fact, and had been for almost 2000 years before his time. Eratosthenes, Egyptian Greek librarian, used geometry to measure the size of the Earth in 236BC.

6.) I don't know what your personal definition of "matriarchy" is, but the fact that Haudenasaunee women had the vote, including exclusive right to vote for village & national chiefs, & had exclusive inheritance rights seems to fit my definition. Matriarchies do exist.

7.) In Classical texts you'll sometimes see the word "corn," but a better translation would be "grain." Actual corn was domesticated in the Americas & only arrived in Europe later. Ditto for beans, squash, tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate, peppers, sunflowers, vanilla...

8.) Organizing history into iron age/ broze age/etc is not actually that useful, BUT, if you DO, most of medieval sub-Saharan Africa needs to count as iron age. Here is a Cameroonian blacksmith demonstrating the traditional way to smelt & forge iron.

9.) Only on the list because of how annoying it is, but the Egyptians built the pyramids. Using contemporary tools. It's irrefutable. Their practice pyramids, before the technique was perfected, are still standing. They painted pictures of some of their construction methods.

10.) Medieval Europeans were a lot of things, but racist wasn't one. They were aware that people from different parts of the world looked different, but it wasn't a thing that mattered as much as religion, language, fealty to a given monarch, etc. None of which are genetic.

im curious abt this one: does "commerce" include exchange systems outside the purview of a juridico-legal state apparatus, a violence-enforced debt collection system? e.g. reciprocal/gift, re-distributive, nomad-market economies? bc i thought "debt" was a bit diff there?

I'm using "debt" in a very broad sense, yes, to include any time you owe someone a favour. Laws to make sure someone pays up were an outgrowth of that. And a lot of pre-Classical history in the Ancient Near East is full of people having to deal with owing each other debt.
