Eddie Bracken, a stage and film comedian who spent more than 70 years in show business, died Thursday from complications after surgery in Montclair, N.J. He was 87. Born and raised in New York, Bracken was best known for his roles in "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" and "Hail the Conquering Hero, " both released in 1944 and directed by Preston Sturges. His start in showbiz came at age 9, when he appeared in "Kiddie Troupers, " a New York rival of the "Our Gang" comedies. After moving to Hollywood in 1940, Bracken signed with Paramount. His female co-stars included Betty Hutton, Dorothy Lamour and Veronica Lake. Bracken moved back to New York in the 1950s and earned a Tony nomination for his co-starring role in "Hello, Dolly!" with Carol Channing. He also originated the role of Archie in "Shinbone Alley" with Eartha Kitt. In 1983, Bracken played Mr. Wally in "National Lampoon's Vacation" with Chevy Chase -- a role for which he was often recognized, his family said.
Roland Hanna, a versatile jazz pianist and composer known for his deft touch and lush harmonies, died Wednesday in Hackensack, N.J., from a viral infection of the heart. He was 70. Hanna, who lived in Liberty, N.Y., worked with a variety of bandleaders ranging from the traditional swing of Benny Goodman to the freewheeling modernism of Charles Mingus. A Detroit native, Hanna began studying piano at age 11 and later graduated from the Juilliard School in New York. He was considered one of the leading exponents the so-called Detroit school of jazz piano, a style that combined the dexterity and sophistication of bebop with the understated elegance of an earlier era. Hanna performed in the late 1980s and early '90s with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the leading exponents of the jazz repertory movement. He also was a solo pianist with the Smithsonian Institution's traveling Duke Ellington exhibition in 1999. In his later years, Hanna focused on composing chamber and orchestral works. Hanna was knighted in 1970 by the government of Liberia. Thereafter, he insisted on being billed as "Sir Roland Hanna."
Myra Hindley, one of Britain's most hated women for her involvement in a string of child killings in the 1960s that gave her the nickname the "Moors Murderer, " died Friday in London. She was 60. She died at West Suffolk hospital in Bury St. Edmunds from respiratory failure, the Prison Service said. In a trial that riveted Britain, Hindley and her boyfriend, Ian Brady, were sentenced to life in prison in 1966 for the murders of 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey and 17-year-old Edward Evans. Brady was also found guilty of killing John Kilbride, 12, and Hindley for sheltering her lover after that murder. The pair confessed in 1987 to murdering Pauline Reade, 16, and Keith Bennett, 12. Hindley always claimed that her role was to abduct the children and that she did not take part in the killings or sex attacks. Hindley and Brady were caught in 1965, after they forced Hindley's brother-in-law, David Smith, to watch as they killed Evans. Smith fled and called the police. Hindley, who became a devout Roman Catholic and received a humanities degree while in prison, admitted that "my conscience will follow me to my dying day." But she insisted that she had paid her debt to society and yearned to be released. Brady remains in prison serving a life sentence.
