Japanese garden
National scenic spot
Sankeien
Sankei-en is a Japanese garden created by businessman Sankei Hara.
In the 175,000m2 undulating grounds of Honmoku, Yokohama, historical buildings such as three-storied pagodas and teahouses gathered from Kyoto and Kamakura are skillfully arranged. Flowers such as plums, cherry blossoms, wisteria, lotuses, and autumn leaves that bloom in each season, as well as bright greenery, make these historic buildings stand out even more, and you can enjoy the harmony between old architecture and nature.
(As of 2022, there are 10 national important cultural property buildings and 3 Yokohama city-designated tangible cultural property buildings, for a total of 17 buildings.)
In February 2007, the entire space of the garden, which combines the old architecture with the surrounding natural environment, was designated as a national scenic spot as a cultural asset. Among the many Japanese gardens, it was evaluated as having high academic, artistic, and ornamental value.
* According to the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties, a place of scenic beauty is defined as one of the most important of the "gardens, bridges, canyons, beaches, mountains, and other places of scenic beauty that are of high artistic or ornamental value to Japan." In Kanagawa Prefecture, this includes Kenchoji Gardens in Kamakura, Engakuji Gardens in Kamakura, Zuisenji Gardens in Kamakura, and Yamate Park in Yokohama.
Gaien
This area was opened to the public in 1906 (Meiji 39).
The 550-year-old three-storied pagoda, which was moved from Tomyoji Temple in Kyoto, is arranged as a landmark.
The moment you step into the garden from the main gate, the view of the three-storied pagoda over the pond is truly spectacular.
inner garden
The area that the Hara family used as their private garden.
In contrast to the outer garden where you can mainly enjoy flowers, the inner garden has a delicate garden made up of old buildings. Among them, Rinshunkaku, a villa built by the Kishu Tokugawa family about 350 years ago, is a building that forms the center of the scenery of the inner garden.
The appearance of the buildings in a row in the shape of a flying geese and the historical background of being a villa built in the early Edo period are the reason why Sankei-en is compared with Katsura Imperial Villa, which is famous as a villa of the imperial family in Kyoto.
