Another example of the usefulness of Wikipedia in the real world that seems pretty current: it can help show when challengers will win elections. Page views let you predict when a challenger has broken though so voters are trying to learn more about them. arxiv.org/pdf/2010.14627

This is so interesting (and a little concerning). I am a librarian who lives in a rural area and edits local town articles just so they will show up on Google above the spammy links "Buy a cemetery plot in $TOWN" This is both great if done well and a mess for WP if done poorly.
