Measure A, which will decide boundaries of Lawndale, Centinela and Wiseburn school districts, appears on its way to passing

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

A few tiny South Bay neighborhoods south of LAX will likely change which school district they are a part of.

Measure A, which would transfer some territory from the Lawndale School District and the Centinela Valley Union High School District to the Wiseburn Unified School District, appeared likely to pass by a wide margin Tuesday night, March 2, though the election boasted few voters.

The measure had received nearly 93% support in early returns, with a majority of votes cast as of 11:48 p.m., according to the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office.

One local group, “Wiseburn Residents for Wiseburn Schools” has sought to get certain areas of unincorporated Los Angeles transferred to the Wiseburn school district. Those areas are termed “Choice Blocks.”

The Wiseburn district educates students living in Hollyglen, Del Aire and Wiseburn, unincorporated areas of the county south of LAX, with about 50% of the district in El Segundo.

The Choice Blocks — areas located between 139th and 142nd streets, east of the 405 Freeway to Inglewood Boulevard — are currently zoned as Lawndale Elementary and Centinela Valley Union High school districts. Lawndale is a transitional kindergarten-to-eighth grade district, while Centinela educates those in high School.

Under the current zoning, families in the Choice Blocks must get a permit from Lawndale or Centinela to attend Wiseburn schools.

If Measure A passes, as appears likely, those Choice Blocks would then join Wiseburn. It is fails, they would stay with Lawndale and Centinela.
