Henry VIII had joined in the Holy League in 1511 with Venice and Spain to defend the Papacy from its enemies and France with military force. As part of the Holy League, during the ongoing Italian Wars, English and Imperial troops under Henry VIII and Maximilian I surprised and routed a body of French cavalry under Jacques de La Palice. Henry and Maximilian were besieging the town of Thérouanne in Artois (now Pas-de-Calais) and after it fell, Henry VIII besieged and took Tournai.

Wallenstein and Tilly pushed him back to Jutland after Tilly's victory near Lutter at Barenberg (1626). Wallenstein conquered North Germany and laid siege in 1628, but did not take it. In 1629 Emperor Ferdinand concludes with King Christian the Peace of Luebeck.

He later redeemed himself during the Eighty Years' War and the Anglo–Spanish War (September 23 - November 13, 1588) with a victory at the Siege of Bergen. He can be seen in Cap-a-pie armour fighting along side an archer, pikeman and Musketeerand subsequently, he fought for the Huguenots under Henry of Navarre. He commanded the English contingent at Henry's Siege of Paris in 1590.

However, Bothwell escaped from the stand-off at Carberry while Queen Mary surrendered fleeing to seek the protection of Queen Elizabeth I of England.

RMPB4CGD–In 1533 Henry broke with Pope Paul III to annul the long-standing marriage to his wife, Catherine of Aragon, and remarry. Catherine was the aunt of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, and Charles took the annulment as a personal insult which resulted in France and the Empire declaring an alliance against Henry in 1538. So Sandown Castle, Kent, England, was built between 1539/40 to protect the Downs in east Kent. It had three tiers of artillery with the embrasures in the walls widely splayed to provide the maximum possible space for the guns to operate.
