youtube.com/watch?v=fmaZdE This is a very interesting watch. Not only bananas, kelps, wood ash, etc in general are rich in K. (some hardwood ash is actually up to 4% K by weight). The K recovered can be processed into KNO3, which is a Boomsalt for making gun powder.

The exact procedure will be different from obtaining metallic K shown in the video, since we only need to obtain KOH from the ashes. KOH can then be reacted with HNO3, nitric acid to produce KNO3.
