貿易収支が赤字であってもプラス成長を続く国もあれば，貿易収支が黒字であってもマイナス成長に終わる国もあります。
1990年代は年平均で約7兆円の貿易黒字が記録しましたが(最大で10兆円強～最小で2兆円)，失われた10年と呼ばれました。
