artillery, mortar, etc. ammo is all precision manufacturing the West can produce as much as Ukraine and the free world needs, IF governments start paying for the expansion of production. So far only the US is investing in expanding ammo production. 5/n

By agreement between 🇵🇱and🇩🇪 two 31 tanks strong Leopard 2 battalions were to be established - 🇵🇱led 2A4 and 🇩🇪 led 2A6. According to the last count 🇵🇱 2A4 battalion is already 32 tanks strong (+4 support vehicles), and the 🇫🇮 decision is pending, so it might yet grow./1

Can PGKs substantially reduce the ammo consumption in the field? Can we produce enough of those, cheaply? Ukraine fires 10k/d during RU offensives. Probably needs to triple that for fire superiority. The West therefore needs production capacity of 1 Million shells per month

I do not have a deeper understanding of defense production, but of manufacturing. It is entirely normal to invest in new production lines, meeting extraordinary limits and tolerances. The only prerequisite is to have a firm order & guaranteed production volumes for your planning.

As a mechanical engineer who spent 15years in the steel industry, I really like these kind of threads. I also liked the videos we saw on the New York Times, where they visited a shell production facility.

Nammo/Patria started ramping up production in October. One factory in Norway actually switched from producing car parts to production of ammunition. Article in Norwegian... vg.no/nyheter/innenr

It is ridiculous that we are talking about increasing production a year after the war started. I really don't see a logical reason why this hasn't been done yet. It is not the money, we gave Ukraine much more already.

And the “fun” thing about this is that the first thing I see on the video, is “Rheinmetal” which really got some heat on Twitter earlier on because they made the russian Mulino training center possible. We both hate and depend on the weapons companies.

Question: How do artillery pieces with electronics get powered? Do they need to charge a battery before firing? Or is there some kind of thermal to voltage transformer on there to power the radars and stuff?

Not entirely true regarding European production. Czech ammo producers doubled their production in 2022, Poland increased it significantly but didn't disclose the numbers, same with Romania and Bulgaria. Rheinmetall is building several new plants (including in Australia).

I hear that Serbia has a ton of capability and is very good in manufacturing shells and fuses. I know NATO/US were happy customers before, maybe it's time to reorder and lean on that supply chain again...

That kind of precision is easy to do especially today. It's just getting it set up to do that would take time. Once set up they could churn those shells out.

1)Agreed: the US/EU/NATO must increase armaments production to: Supply Ukraine and replenish Stocks. The West is finally realizing that this is a Shooting War with Putin/Russia, therefore, Western armaments production must increase to a "Wartime Pace": Why? To ensure Freedom

2)The same armaments production idea includes the production of: MBTs, Armored Vehicles etc. Remember: Most Importantly: Ukraine is WILLING TO FIGHT THIS WAR AGAINST PUTIN: WITH UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS. Therefore there's NO US/NATO SOLDIERS IN DIRECT COMBAT AGAINST PUTIN/RUSSIA.
