  • I don’t know what you’re asking, but it seems pretty clear that they’ve made some minor improvements to Storage Spaces that now allow you to boot from a virtual disk on SS....

  • I was curious because I was not able to find any official text about this new supported (Microsoft uses this, right?) feature (boot from SS) of Storage Spaces on internet (Microsoft or others).

Back in Windows 8 / Server 2012 - it was not possible (this WAS officially stated).

In this article https://www.thomasmaurer.ch/2017/10/boot-from-storage-spaces-virtual-disk-in-windows-10/ Opens a new window Thomas too confirmed it is present on Surface Pro 1TB.

Finally, I did my own test yesterday:

    - I took 2x SSDs, connected them to my running Win 1703 (through USB-SATA reduction), made a 2way mirror Storage Space on them

    - then I disconnected them from my PC, put them in new test PC (with UEFI support, SATA as AHCI), booted from my "Win1703 installation USB flashdisk"

    - in setup where you are choosing disk where to put OS, I saw 2 partitions (so the SS is visible for install)... I deleted these partitions and proceed with install to this Unallocated space on "Storage Space disk"

    - installation was completed successfully, I removed USB boot drive and restarted ... but BIOS (ehm, UEFI) did not see the Windows installation

    - so I reinserted USB and proceed with installation wizzard again to the point of disk layout - it seemed all right and functional

At the end I was not able to boot this install. I don't know if because of my motherboard or if some more tweaks are necessary :(

I was quite intrested to see Win10 boot from software RAID1 :(  ... I'm not planning to do more test now but if anyone succeed, post a reply here ;)
