In a country where young men were sent to die as kamikaze pilots during WWII and Japanese soldiers ordered thousands of families in Okinawa to commit suicide rather than surrender, invoking "mass suicide" or "mass seppuku" touches on historical sensitivities

At times, Dr Narita has pushed boundaries of taste. During a panel, he told audience that “if this can become a Japanese society where people like you all commit seppuku one after another, it wouldn’t be just a social security policy but it would be the best ‘Cool Japan’ policy"

As always thanks for this article. You mentioned in the article that Yale hasn’t responded to your request for comments. How many days did you give them to respond? I’m not really sure about this, but as I recall the TImes had a policy to wait for 14 days to respond?

The sensational words “mass suicide” followed by his explanation, which is actually encouraging mass retirement of decision makers who has been unsuccessful to bounce back Japan for last 30 years. The economy, birth rates, numbers tell yet they still sit in the same positions.

Almost all sensible Japanese understand that Mr. Narita does not seriously believe that the elderly should commit suicide. His intention is to give some sway to the rigid Japanese political world and media.

No typos in the article; here, however, your semicolon belongs outside the quotes and you're missing "with" after "button" in "has pushed Japan's hottest button his suggestions." (Sorry, I only do this with reporters' tweets that are retweeted by institutional Times accounts.)

This is evil and the NY Times editors who gave the okay to publication of Narita "suggestions" for mass murder are complicit, as are his current hosts at Yale. Please read Hannah Arendt. This is "the gradual normalization of evil" that she warned us about.
