Japan vs. US Sales

Super Mario US outsells its Japanese counterpart almost seven to one. Full story inside.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. last week released the latest sales figures for first-party software in Japan and overseas. The head-to-head comparison shows how painfully low domestic sales for Nintendo 64 games are in the company's home territory compared to sales in the US and, to a lesser extent, the PAL territories (Europe, Australia).

The best-selling Nintendo 64 game in Japan remains the ever-popular Mario Kart 64, with more than 2 million copies sold. For comparison's sake, this compares to over 6 million copies sold in overseas markets. Likewise, the US release of Super Mario 64 sold more than 9 million times, compared to 1.8 million Japanese sales (this consolidated ranking includes the "Shindou" Rumble Pak re-release).

Fans of more mature games should note the extremely high sales figures Rare's GoldenEye achieved in the overseas markets. The game unseated Mario Kart 64 as the #2 title, with almost 7 million copies sold. We're confident that Nintendo will not ignore the game's runaway success and put the Perfect Dark team on their next mature action title for Dolphin the day PD ships off to the manufacturing plants.

The Top 5 best-selling Nintendo 64 titles in Japan, according to Nintendo's sales data, are:

1. Mario Kart 64: 2,060,000
2. Super Mario 64: 1,800,00
3. Super Smash Bros.: 1,520,000
4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: 1,450,000
5. Pokemon Stadium: 1,370,000

The Top 5 US/PAL titles are:

1. Super Mario 64: 9,040,000
2. GoldenEye 007: 6,980,000
3. Mario Kart 64: 6,230,000
4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: 5,720,000
5. Diddy Kong Racing: 3,780,000

None of the above listings include third-party releases. The data is current as of the 09/30/99.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is CDPR's Most Expensive DLC - IGN Daily Fix
In today's Daily Fix:Cyberpunk 2077 is getting the long-awaited DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty, later this year, and developer CD Projekt Red is spending big bucks on it. According to the developer, it cost more to make than The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine expansion, which was practically a whole game in and of itself. In other news, the Dead Space remake is apparently so scary, even the developers have a hard time playing it at night. The team consulted with fans early on in development, and this resulted in some incredibly creepy environments, so creepythat technical director David Robillard didn't like playing with headphones on after hours. And finally, Crystal Dynamics is stopping development on Marvel's Avengers. The game will not be available for digital purchase after September, and cosmetic items will be made free. If you already own it, you can still keep playing, though!
