Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead

Over the years, hundreds of millions of people have sent over a trillion Tweets, with billions more every week.
Twitter data are among the world’s most powerful data sets. We’re committed to enabling fast & comprehensive access so you can continue to build with us.
We’ll be back with more details on what you can expect next week.

I’m not surprised, though I did think you’d just tighten API access, and cut off all apps who monetize your data and build those same products internally.

charging developers for creating features for your own product? lol you should be paying them
?? Almost always it’s to create features for their own product.

Is it clear if this Trumpesque edict applies to the (seemingly random & gated) Academic Research Product Track? But yes, this is a huge blow to non-scraped social media research.

Try posting anything to Instagram programmatically.
Just how much value do most of the third party Twitter API developers bring to the platform?
I haven't posted anything using third party software or Twitter APIs. Most accounts for real people don't either. Just clout crew
every other meme is a quiz, or a personality test, or a pfp maker, or a friends-list image generator, or 'who are your twitter kids'
charging the people who make the content that makes your site better seems ill-advised

We’ve built a platform for managing engagement to encourage engagement in the voting process - several thousand interactions per election. Can you tell us how much this is going to cost? Or point at a page?

Ok but will it come with a colored check mark so I look cool?

Does this include academic research access? Are you going to start charging academics to do research now? This is extortion.
What if it's like $10/month?
How much do the journals charge? How much do universities charge in tuition? Why are academics so sacred?

A weeks notice is cruel. In what world do you think solo developers have the time to make changes on your whims in a weeks time?
The thing is, we don’t even have a weeks notice. Without the pricing being clear, we don’t even know where to start with re-architecting. If the premium API pricing is any guide, if they charge by request, we make the upper limit of that every few seconds.

, does this include automated weather alerts of significant weather like tornadoes and severe thunderstorms from both government and weather communicator accounts? If so, this is potentially a life-threatening decision made on very short notice.
I can have my Twitter notifications off or all notifications off & my phone still alerts me at 2 am of an Amber alert or a tornado. If the weather is really bad cell service isn’t a thing. Get a radio if you are worried.
