When the High Court of Justice votes 10-1 on an issue, and a sizeable minority of the country’s citizens decry it as political and invalid, then there’s truly something broken with the system and with the society.Wednesday’s dramatic ruling by the High Court that Shas leader Arye Deri cannot serve as a minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, seems pretty clear cut.As Yonah Jeremy Bob wrote in these pages on Thursday, the one-sided vote crossed all political boundaries. Last month, in Beit She’an, a man who changed Israeli politics, former deputy prime minister David Levy, marked his 85th birthday.Like most parents, Levy is undoubtedly proud of his children, two of whom followed in their father’s footsteps and were elected to the Knesset: son Jackie and daughter Orly. Levy can also take pride in the social revolution he helped bring about.
