Prior to pursuing a Master of Forestry degree at Duke University, I was distraught at the sight of any tree being chopped to the ground. Like many people, some innate sense inside of me felt anguish at the sight of it, feeling pain for our planet, which has endured immense environmental destruction by humankind. But, through the course of my degree, I began to understand that timber is a renewable resource, and that forestry plays an important role in helping our planet become resilient to the effects of climate change. Forestry, I learned, is not the antithesis of my strong conservation ethic, it’s a critical part of the solution.

Impact in an Unprecedented Year

The Forestland Group (TFG) is pleased to present its 2020 Impact Report. TFG’s second annual impact report reviews the company’s performance in environmental, social, governance and leadership impacts. It includes quantitative data on 80+ metrics that are categorized according to the Sustainable Development Goals and IRIS+ framework. The publication also highlights 12 case studies that demonstrate TFG’s commitment to land stewardship, community engagement, and cross-sector partnerships.

Innovative Harvest Operations Leverage Local Knowledge and Enhance Ecological Stewardship

In 2018 TFG began using oxen for harvesting timber from plantations in Costa Rica. Skidding logs out of the forest with oxen lowers soil impacts, reducing the potential for erosion, and lowers residual stand damage. The production costs of using oxen are comparable to using conventional mechanized equipment.

Delivering large scale carbon sequestration in complex, diverse, natural forests

Since 2012 TFG has integrated forest carbon offset projects into forest management planning and practice, as a means of generating revenue while mitigating the effects of climate change. This video highlights the people, the place, and the process of the development of one of the largest forest carbon offset projects in the US to date in the Central Appalachians.

Cross-sector partnerships restore habitat for ecological and recreational benefits

In recent years, TFG has worked in cooperation with Trout Unlimited and the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department on a variety of aquatic ecosystem restoration projects. These projects include improved culvert location and design for more natural water flows, control of invasive species in wetlands, introduction of large woody material for improved fish habitat, and maintenance of wetland riparian zones.
