Apple Music has released its first trailer for the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show, starring Rihanna. Titled “Rihanna Is Back,” the clip is a celebration of RiRi’s return to music and a teaser of her February 12 performance at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona.

Live Nation loses motion to dismiss in Drake the Ruler case

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yolando Orozco has denied Live Nation’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought against them by Drakeo the Ruler’s brother, Devante Caldwell (aka Ralfy the Plug), Rolling Stone reports and The FADER can confirm. Her ruling, obtained by RS, holds that the fact that no “prior similar incedent” to Drakeo’s tragic stabbing death at the Once Upon a Time in LA Festival in December 2021 had occurred at Banc of California Stadium is not — as the global entertainment company argued — sufficient grounds to dismiss Caldwell’s claims of negligence, premises liability, and emotional distress (both negligent and intentional).

Shakira joins Bizarrap for first BZRP session of 2023

Bizarrap’s BZRP Music Sessions took the world by storm last year, making him a hot commodity in his native Argentina and one of the most sought-after producers in South America at large. Each session finds him collaborating with a new artist, and these have included some of the biggest acts from his home country (L-Gante, Nathy Peluso) and beyond (Nicky Jam, Anuel AA, et al.). The 2022 season ended on a high note with Vol. 52 feat. Quevedo, which topped the Billboard global (excluding the U.S.) charts for six weeks. Last night (January 11), he returned for BZRP’s first installment of 2023, featuring none other than the Colombian queen of pop, Shakira.

Song You Need: Xiu Xiu share a good song with a bad name

Xiu Xiu founder Jaimie Stewart has always been a spectral presence. Everything he touches assumes a vaguely discomfiting aura, unsettled by his seemingly bottomless well of despair. In this context, just the name of the band’s newest track, “Maybae Baeby,” induces goosebumps on the arms of those familiar with their work. Indeed, the cutesy title is a front for a remarkably disturbing cut, combining clangorous harsh noise with a mumbled vocal performance from Angela Seo (a consistent part of Xiu Xiu’s constantly fluctuating lineup since 2009) detailing a dark hallucination experienced by a victim of child abuse.

Black Thought announces collaborative album with El Michels Affair

Last year Black Thought of The Roots teamed up with producer Danger Mouse on the critically-acclaimed Cheat Codes. Clearly keen to continue this run of excellence, the Roots MC has today announced details of another collaborative album. Glorious Game, out April 14 on Big Crown Records, was made alongside El Michels Affair. Lead single "Grateful" is streaming below.

Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott, and Dr. Dre to receive honorary Grammys

The Recording Academy and Black Music Collective have announced 2023’s Global Impact Grammy Award winners: Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre, and Epic Records CEO Sylvia Rhone (an honorary BMC chairwoman). The award celebrates artists for their “personal and professional achievements in the music industry,” per Grammy.com. They’ll be honored along with the rest of the winners at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, which will take place on February 5 at the Hollywood Palladium.

Lonnie Holley has taken — in his own retelling, at least — a darker and more serpentine path to greatness than any other contemporary artist. Born the seventh of 27 children in Jim Crow Alabama, he claims he was traded for a bottle of whiskey at age four and had started working by five — collecting trash, washing dishes, picking cotton, digging graves, et al. He spent time at the notoriously brutal (and still in operation, under a different name) Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children, had his first child at age 15 — he’d go on to have 14 more — and was pronounced brain dead after being hit by a car the same year.

One in 25 vinyl albums sold last year was a Taylor Swift LP

Taylor Swift‘s discography dominated 2022’s vinyl album sales, accounting for one out of every 25 vinyl LPs sold, according to the end-of-year report from Luminate via Billboard. Her 2022 project Midnights sold 945,000 units while 2020’s folklore was last year’s 7th highest seller with 174,000 copies sold. In total, Swift sold 1.695 million vinyl copies of her catalog.
