Pathos: NEHRUJI successfully used a wide range of emotional appeals to inform, influence and persuade the Indian Constituent Assembly and the people of India through radio (audience). Although the “Tryst with Destiny” was full emotions, it is a well articulated political speech which excellently collected ideas and presented them in a very logical and patriotic fashion. He uses ‘we’ in the first sentence which groups the people as one and as it was the first day of free India, providing the feeling of being a united nation. Nehruji, in line 2, clearly addresses the audience by saying, ‘At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will Awake to Life and Freedom,’. This signified that the world isn’t the intended audience and while they will be asleep, India, country will be awake and listening as they are the target audience. He also expresses the joy of waking up to an independent nation. Nehru establishes the audience in the first paragraph to ensure the audience is aware that they are the ones the message is addressed to. Nehru makes the forthcoming message of his speech more distinct and precise. The purpose of this speech is to motivate the audience to serve the nation to everyone’s best capability. He stresses the importance of the moment in lines 4-5 appealing to the emotional torture of the past and finally finding their voice.
