Elvira’s Mom and Farallon- Stellar Descent / Aylwin split (2013)

Recently, CCRR observed that the feral cats in the neighborhood were putting on weight. Logically speaking, there had to be an explanation for this, and thus began The Mystery of the Fat Cats. “Coincidently” we also noticed the crazy old lady that lived in one of the apartments across the street (Elvira’s Mom), was moving.
After several seconds of intense concentration we deduced the only logical explanation for the feral cat’s weight gain is that Elvira’s Mom has been feeding the cats.
In the light of the moon she duck-walks naked into the front yard of the apartments with a can of raw tuna stuffed into her orifices, then, standing still as a statue, she waits for the feral cats to approach and feed, like a hunter. When the street light momentarily flickers back on, she throws a blanket over herself like Frodo, in Lord of the Rings and, disguises herself as a rock.

Today we have the Farralon split featuring Stellar Descent and Aylwin, a black metal band and an atmospheric blackened post-rock band. The split has the typical California-Cool-Kid in so far as they only made 10 physical copies (hand numbered, of course), then, later, another twenty, other than that it is free and Bandcamp-only at the moment, which is real nice.
The first track is by Aylwin and while listenable, it is too long and the whole blackened atmospheric and post-rock sounds have been pretty well explored, and this track belonged in the last slot, not the first. It would have fit into the flow much better at that spot, sleepy songs aren’t good first songs.
The second and third tracks are by Stellar Descent and is in actuality just one good, long, soaring song. While thoroughly black metal an acoustic guitar is used to good effect, and while some might call the part with the Canadian geese (I’m not kidding) a bit much, I still enjoy this song and it carries this split into the category of one of this years best releases to date.
It is rare now a days to see a band explore new sounds from a purely black metal perspective (most attempts are just cover bands who forgot the original lyrics), 89%.

Introducing “Butt Rock” and Terminator 2 s/t Part 1 (2012)

I am announcing a new genre to the world; Butt Rock. I don’t remember where I found this band and it sat on the back burner for quite a while, but once I started listening to it I immediately envisioned the band giving each other eyebrow piercings with a safety pin in a single-wide trailer while blasting Pantera.
A trio out of Denton, Texas playing a sludgy, doomy form of hard rock. While they are on Metallum this is a case where I have to disagree with the Metal Archives. This isn’t metal.
The seventh song starts off with a sorta catchy bass riff, which is basically the same riff that two previous songs started with, then there is a pause in the middle of the song to solo that same fucking riff for a fourth time! Wtf?! Ohh, yeah, with “intense” vocals screamed “passionately” throughout the whole fucking album as if these clowns listened to way too much Limp Biscuit and Korn at some point and now perceive that distant memory as their own creative ability.
This is Butt Rock in all of its glory and the only really positive thing I can say about it is that the production is pretty good, thus earning it a rating of 51%.

Random Tag Game; Bardo Pond

My computer is still dead so I still have no access to my external hard rive and 200+ gigs of my music, so I am delving into new music that is less familiar to me in an effort to broaden my horizons. And because I have no choice. Down to one clean shirt, today became Laundry Day and Bardo Pond came up YouTube while I was waiting.
I’m listening to them now, and before I’ve read anything about them I can say that it isn’t bad, dancing back and forth between slow psych-ish rock and “hard”-ish riffs and the female vocalist is talking about her fish smell, which, at least she is honest about these things. The next song that came up was Limerick, which is much better than Fish Stence or whatever that first one was called.
Bardo Pond is a place described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, thus where the Philadelphia based psychedelic/ space rock band derived their name. Formed in 1991 rather proficient ever since, they seem to be somewhat well known, and, yet again, I haven’t heard of them. They have some really good songs, and some that are just a bit over the top and there is a compilation of their’s on Bandcamp that I am going to check out also. Of the first six songs on YouTube three are masterpieces of psych-space rock. The rest… Fish stench.

Cough- Ritual Abuse (2010)

Cough is stoner/sludge from Richmond, Virginia. This is their latest release and they are currently on tour in Europe, slow, low and down-tuned, this is a sludge on an epic scale… Almost too epic, it is like they are trying a touch too hard, which is why I prefer their first full length album, Sigillum Luciferi, but this is not bad, but the vocals really aren’t stoner/doom. I’m sorry, but some of the vocals come at you like something a radio DJ would call hardcore(!), and the album doesn’t seem real focused. It comes across more as a follow-up album to a really good one [which it is] rather than a new and original work; 73%

And here we have part of the 9th issue of the Nutty Cock ‘n Nuts Sodomy ‘zine, a friend recently found these, she said, “Yeah, I was looking at these… Das Büt is…” Which sums it up quite well. He recently sent me the newest issue (14), which I meant to post, but I grabbed this one instead.
If you’re not already familiar with the Nutty Cock ‘n Nuts Sodomy ‘zine, it is basically demented art and tirades by Das Büt, who has a special sense of humor. While some of his work is considered over the top by many, there is a certain humor and creativity that I can appreciate. For instance, he had a habit of entertaining himself years ago by calling up this guys grandmother and propositioning her for sex. And I say habit, because he didn’t do it just once or twice… (DasBüt.com)

Øresund Space Collective- West, Space and Love (2012)

I have been getting a bit burnt on metal, and then I remembered Øresund Space Collective and found this album of theirs on bandcamp that had been released earlier this year.
For those who don’t know, ØSC is a jam band collective playing spaced-out music, and as a collective there is a revolving and constantly changing line-up of artists who play. And, it is all improve too. It consists of artists from Sweden and Denmark (sometimes the US also) and I can honestly say that of the 14 albums they have released I don’t dislike any.
This is the smallest the collective has ever been with just three musicians. The recording is a couple of years old, released in March of this year, I can honestly say that it is one of my favorite albums of the year blending Eastern influenced drone with their space-jam style earning it a 90% rating. There is little to complain about in this record if one is into this style and format of music, enjoy.

⸮NEWS FLASH!⸮ Nutty Cock and Nuts Sodomy Zine CONTINUES!

The Nutty Cock and Sodomy ‘zine is slated to come out with issue #14 next month!!!
For those readers who aren’t from Orlando and don’t know Das But, he has a demented sense of humor which he deleveres with an absolute monotone voice, saying the most outrageous things with a stone cold expression. Supposedly, one time, things happened, one thing lead to another, bla bla bla, and the French government told him to leave France and never to speak of France or the French again…
Obviously he has good things to say if the country that doesn’t defend itself is butt-hurt by what he says.
So check out the link below that explains the history of the ‘zine and why those Food not Bombs turds are real clowns. If you like the art, help him out and send him a buck or two.

nutty cock n nuts sodomy ‘zine

image

Today is Friday the 13th (again) and for a change of pace I am posting part of a Nutty Cock n Nut Sodomy ‘zine. For those who don’t already know, this is one of Das Büt’s weird projects that he uses to offend people… as with all of this guy’s work, “so disturbing it’s funny” is an accurate description.
