Wolf Creek, SD – The new Lakota Tech High School (www.lakotatech.net) welcomed students into their brand new school on Monday, March 22, 2021. The school board had previously voted 4-0 to return to in person school after spending the past year during the pandemic in virtual education.
Stephanie Eisenmanger, Lakota Tech principal said, “We probably had one hundred and fifteen students that first day but we continued to add students daily, we’re up to one hundred and seventy-five at the present time. It is so good to have students in the building. It is easier to get to know them, it’s much more fun and engaging, sometimes it’s difficult to get students to turn on their mics during online learning. Students had a choice to come back or stay online, with our safety plan, we have room for two hundred. Any more than that we’d have to go to a hybrid plan, as it is, busing is a challenge.”
Elementary and middle schools in Oglala Lakota County Schools are scheduled to return Thursday, April 8, 2021. Again parents have the choice to send their children back to school or keep them home and continue their education online.
The daily schedule begins at 9:30 a.m. for in-person students who receive breakfast. Period A begins at 10:05 a.m. and ends five minutes before B period begins at 11:30 a.m.; and ends with lunch at 12:30 p.m. for in-person students. Period C begins at 1:05 p.m. and ends five minutes before period D begins at 2:20 p.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. when the busses load. The last bus leaves at 5:00 p.m. when activities end.
Eisenmanger said, “Sure, like most schools, we’ve had learning loss, we plan on in person summer school at all of OLCS schools across the reservation. This summer at the high school, we’ll offer credit recovery classes, we’ll be working with Western Dakota Tech as well. The high school is offering track, girl’s golf, archery, baseball and esports.”
She added, “We’ll have a better grasp of our numbers for next year after we start our registrations in the eighth grade, we’re looking at four hundred students in the fall, currently we have three hundred and forty seven. Our first graduating class is set for graduation on May 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with twenty seven seniors graduating.”
