SUMMERLAND, Neb. — In November 2019, the communities of Clearwater, Orchard, and Ewing joined forces to post a bond for a new school.
The communities broke ground on the $34.3 million bond project in spring 2020, and the facility currently serves 417 students from three towns.
“It just has been a wonderful opportunity to not have to worry about sending kids to Clearwater, Ewing, or Orchard. We can now all come up to the same site,” said Kyle Fink, Summerland Public Schools superintendent.
The school encompasses students from pre-K to 12th grade. The facility also expanded the school's CTE labs.
“We have a larger area for woodworking,” Finke added. “We have a green room, so we have what’s called the “Bobcast” we have students that are learning how to do broadcast in class, right here in the school.”
The facility also has collaborative areas that allow the teachers to bring students out of the classrooms into a bigger space.
School board president, Ed Nordby said that like him, many people are thankful for everyone who help put this project together.
“It was a collaborate effort from all three communities, I think we became one community,” Nordby said.
The vice president of Hausmann Construction, Steve Thiele, said this facility doesn't compare to the buildings the students used to go to in their communities.
“In the past, the three communities have done things together as far as sports and education,” Thiele said. “But I think is really important to get this project done in a neutral that each town has some ownership in.”
Finke said that the bond is expected to be completely paid off in 20 years.
