Crunchyroll offers a variety of figurines and memorabilia alongside their anime and Asian-content video streaming. One such offering was going to be the latest GEM figurine release – Hikari and Angewomon.
The distributor announced the cancellation of the figurine’s availability in both North America and Europe.
The reasoning behind the cancellation was quite honest and somewhat interesting:
“This cancellation came at the order of the original rights holders. They wanted to market Digimon as a child-friendly property, and though this Angewomon figure wasn’t appropriate for that image,” said the Crunchyroll representative.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Crunchyroll is refunding all orders on the set. The Angemon & Takeru figures are still coming, however.
(Editor’s Note: You can obviously still import the figurine, as I’m sure a few of you might be considering this)

February 29, 2016 at 7:10 pmThat’s sad, but I get that they want to maintain a child friendly image.
That said, boobs not being ‘child friendly’ is a conversation on its own…

February 29, 2016 at 7:21 pmDigimon is not the child friendly one – that’s Pokemon.
That is a nice figure. Plus Angewomon was always a bit spirited, lets say:

February 29, 2016 at 7:26 pmIt’s MegaHouse exclusive in Japan in some dumb way, as I recall. Everyone got fucked on this one, MegaHouse included.
Guest
February 29, 2016 at 7:29 pmIt’s not like they’re selling these down at the Toys’R Us, it’s an expensive figure for sale on an anime streaming site. This reeks of some marketing team having absolutely no idea what they’re doing.
GabetheGEN
February 29, 2016 at 7:33 pmRather pointless to keep away in the first place since judging by the prices I’ve seen, no parent would want to buy the figure, even if it wasn’t inappropriate. Also in regards to keeping the series “child-friendly,” problem 1: I don’t see a lot of children today, at least in North America, heavily invested in Digimon, unless they have Netflix, episodes on home video, or was given the games by their parents. The only people that would care about the series are mainly people who grew up watching it. Problem 2: have they not paid attention to the new Digimon game? The ESRB gave it a T rating. Whether you find some of the content not suitable for children odd or not, it was allowed here. How come that got a pass but not the figure?
In the end, whoever has the rights to the series outside Japan, you are dumb.
Gale
February 29, 2016 at 7:34 pmIn other news, prices for the Angewoman figure have jumped up to $300+ USD!
Oh but we can have the muscular, rippling chest of Angeman, though.

February 29, 2016 at 7:39 pmIt’s worth mentioning that the rights holder for Digimon is currently Saban. Blame them for everything. Send them angry e-mails, etc.
Also, as this is a Megahouse/Bandai web exclusive in Japan, importing it is going to be very expensive and/or difficult compared to ordering it off of sites like Crunchyroll so Saban has effectively blocked a shitload of sales simply because they hold the copyright in the West. Likely because they’re bitter that they’re not getting a piece of the pie.
It’s pretty fucked up in any case.

February 29, 2016 at 7:49 pmThey could’ve made up some reason where she snaps out of it during the battle between Guts and Griffit, instead of going to the King of Fairies and all that jazz. Those parts felt a bit out of place in the Berserk universe.

I’ll wait for the entire thing to be released (if ever) before going back to it.

February 29, 2016 at 8:07 pmtrue but making it import-only means it’ll cost more for american customers, which could drive them away very easily. February 29, 2016 at 9:06 pmTl;dr the female body is evil in all shapes and forms. We get it. What I don’t get is why companies send this message to potential costumers whether it’s Crunchyroll, Square Enix, Nintendo or whoever else. It’s quite sad.
British_Otaku
February 29, 2016 at 9:23 pmAnd despite this the games are still uncensored correct? You know things which are much more likely to fall into the hands or view of children than a hobbyist figure which goes for over $100.
Nintendo encouraged at least one figure of Tharja and I’ve heard no reports of Nintendo stopping sellers from shipping them outside of Japan even if they didn’t push stock themselves. >_>
Very strange. You’d think they would stop at the animated series on TV or something.

February 29, 2016 at 9:53 pmLet me get this straight: You want to keep something “child friendly” despite the vast majority of fans who grew up watching the series, like myself, are adults now? give me a break. What kid would buy a $100+ figurine! It’s like companies who do this hates money and would rather give fans a huge finger instead.
Duskmelt
February 29, 2016 at 9:56 pmI never understood the “women’s bodies are evil and inappropriate and should be covered and controlled” paradigm of thought. Many children have been breast-fed or have seen their mothers naked before. It’s rather common growing up. The above figurine isn’t the end of the world for children. Not to mention children aren’t even the target market for the figurine. Another day, another senseless panic over the female form.

March 1, 2016 at 12:03 amOh, I think she’s just busty enough.
Also, most of the people that watched digimon back in the day are adults now.

A very poor excuse to do this.

March 1, 2016 at 12:38 amGuess Bamco is bowing down to the faux outrage about sexualization as well then, huh?
Oh well, if they really don’t want this audience, they simply won’t have it.
Same went for not releasing the recent game on PC; I’m not going out of my way to jump through hoops in order to buy something – if you prevent me from just spending my money on games, I’ll just have to get it for free when there’s an emulator for it instead.

SIGH… I seriously hate this regressive leftism.

MusouTensei
March 1, 2016 at 4:57 amMaybe they are only the right holders in the west? Or the western branch of the international holder, like NoA acting very autonomous from Nintendo japan.
Nazzaroth
March 1, 2016 at 5:30 amhow is it that everyone is complaining about saying this figurine is not for kids instead of complaining that its just braindead stupid to say that a women with a bit bigger bust cant stay in a kids room?
Like holy shit she has 2 cm more than average and suddenly its scaring kids for live? WHAT KIND OF BULLSHIT IS THAT?
is saban saying every women with big boobs has to cover up cause they are not childfriendly? THATS misigonistic! not some virtual boobs ore plastic boobs on a figurine. gezzus fuck companies are getting really whiny these days!
Thanatos2k
March 1, 2016 at 5:32 amSaying “original” rights holders makes it sound like it was the people from Japan who made this decision.
Ero-Sennin
March 1, 2016 at 5:41 amDoesn’t Bamco have a say in this at all?, freaking Saban.Ent needs to chill out…
I mean what “Child” would have this kind of money to blow on some shit like this in the first place? or “Parent” for that matter would be willing to spend $100 on a freaking PVC figure for their child that doesn’t do shit but “Look” cool?
Lastly Digimon isn’t just for children, have they even played Cyber Sleuth?

March 1, 2016 at 8:43 amI would assume Bamco is the one that complained as they own the base rights to digimon and simply made a deal to give the animation rights to Toei and Toei did a deal with Saban to localize it for US market. Something to remember Digimon started as a toy/game series in Japan owned by Bandai now part of Bamco.
Daryl Corey
March 1, 2016 at 8:53 amYeah Digimon isn’t exactly a big name with kids like pokemon. Digimon in the US seems to mostly just appeal to the people that grew up with the anime or were teens when the first season came out. The fanbase is mostly adults

March 1, 2016 at 9:01 amThis is no misunderstanding from Saban, it’s Saban wanting to do what they want to do. They see Digimon as something for little kids, and they don’t give a damn about any new direction the series has taken.
Barmont
March 1, 2016 at 9:10 amSoooo beautiful…
Daryl Corey
March 1, 2016 at 9:11 amSaban only has the animation rights in the US though. Wouldn’t anything non-animation be in the realm of control of Bamco given they are the original rights holders being the creators of Digimon in the first place With Toei at best owning the rights to the original characters from the anime IE the humans if that and Saban only having the distribution rights for the anime in the US
