Angewomon Figurine Too Busty for Western Release

digimon 02-29-16-1

Crunchyroll offers a variety of figurines and memorabilia alongside their anime and Asian-content video streaming. One such offering was going to be the latest GEM figurine release – Hikari and Angewomon.

The distributor announced the cancellation of the figurine’s availability in both North America and Europe.

The reasoning behind the cancellation was quite honest and somewhat interesting:

“This cancellation came at the order of the original rights holders. They wanted to market Digimon as a child-friendly property, and though this Angewomon figure wasn’t appropriate for that image,” said the Crunchyroll representative.

digimon 02-29-16-3 digimon 02-29-16-2

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Crunchyroll is refunding all orders on the set. The Angemon & Takeru figures are still coming, however.

(Editor’s Note: You can obviously still import the figurine, as I’m sure a few of you might be considering this)

It’s not like they’re selling these down at the Toys’R Us, it’s an expensive figure for sale on an anime streaming site. This reeks of some marketing team having absolutely no idea what they’re doing.

Rather pointless to keep away in the first place since judging by the prices I’ve seen, no parent would want to buy the figure, even if it wasn’t inappropriate. Also in regards to keeping the series “child-friendly,” problem 1: I don’t see a lot of children today, at least in North America, heavily invested in Digimon, unless they have Netflix, episodes on home video, or was given the games by their parents. The only people that would care about the series are mainly people who grew up watching it. Problem 2: have they not paid attention to the new Digimon game? The ESRB gave it a T rating. Whether you find some of the content not suitable for children odd or not, it was allowed here. How come that got a pass but not the figure?

In the end, whoever has the rights to the series outside Japan, you are dumb.

It’s worth mentioning that the rights holder for Digimon is currently Saban. Blame them for everything. Send them angry e-mails, etc.

Also, as this is a Megahouse/Bandai web exclusive in Japan, importing it is going to be very expensive and/or difficult compared to ordering it off of sites like Crunchyroll so Saban has effectively blocked a shitload of sales simply because they hold the copyright in the West. Likely because they’re bitter that they’re not getting a piece of the pie.

It’s pretty fucked up in any case.

And despite this the games are still uncensored correct? You know things which are much more likely to fall into the hands or view of children than a hobbyist figure which goes for over $100.

Nintendo encouraged at least one figure of Tharja and I’ve heard no reports of Nintendo stopping sellers from shipping them outside of Japan even if they didn’t push stock themselves. >_>

I never understood the “women’s bodies are evil and inappropriate and should be covered and controlled” paradigm of thought. Many children have been breast-fed or have seen their mothers naked before. It’s rather common growing up. The above figurine isn’t the end of the world for children. Not to mention children aren’t even the target market for the figurine. Another day, another senseless panic over the female form.

This is no misunderstanding from Saban, it’s Saban wanting to do what they want to do. They see Digimon as something for little kids, and they don’t give a damn about any new direction the series has taken.

Saban only has the animation rights in the US though. Wouldn’t anything non-animation be in the realm of control of Bamco given they are the original rights holders being the creators of Digimon in the first place With Toei at best owning the rights to the original characters from the anime IE the humans if that and Saban only having the distribution rights for the anime in the US

I’ve been noticing that Nintendo has been on a Censoring bandwagon since late last year and it seems to be spreading. So now we have figures being censored. I feel like that if they are going to continue censoring then we should stop buying or buy imports only.

I’d rather not have that happen. As a fan, I’d feel that’s a cop-out. The way things went, she was mind broken and traumatized by the events that occurred. She will need extensive work or magic before things ever get better.
This is Guts reward after all is said an done. I expect things to get more grim-dark before all is done. I also expect the ending to be a bit bittersweet instead of happy but I might be asking a bit much.
