I was just made aware of this today and had no idea before. Seems to me wrong-headed to dismiss his ideas for his terrible conduct and morally objectionable to excuse his terrible conduct for his ideas. Acknowledging both (as you do) seems to me the correct response.

Walter Lewin, known as a great physics teacher, dismissed and videos removed due to sexual harassment.
Einstein, Feynman, Picasso...
Their work is tainted by their conduct.

It would seem unwise to out a person as a horrible human being if you were witness to his horrible action, as you would have had a duty to inform the police, were it horrible. I can’t think of a horrible act that is legal.

100% agree. Everyone I’ve seen talking about Kripke’s misconduct (including the op of this tweet) seemed to have known about it prior to his death. Hell, Mr. Lagerlund says he WITNESSED it! Yet everyone has chosen to denounce him NOW? Well what good is that???

Did you confront him, as a male colleague in a position of power?
Did you tell the women he mistreated that you would support them if they chose to take action?
Did you make sure every other conference organizer knew of his behavior?

I think one cannot have mixed feelings about a persons death unless this person wanted to murder you.

My father was in a department with this guy when I was a small child and once he even came to our house. I remember hearing that he was a bit weird, and my parents were exhausted after he left.

As a colleague of Kripke I can attest to the fact that he once tried to touch my wiener after I specifically requested that no one try to touch my wiener that year. I did a spin move when I saw him coming and he just grazed my balls briefly, to his chagrin. Great thinker tho.

Police systematically ignore sexual assault against women, doubly so when the person accused is a powerful man. Moreover, please consider the personal cost of making such an allegation against a powerful predator. That's a ruined career right there.
