If you think Pokémon is a JRPG you have an extremely poor understanding of how games, categories and language in general work.

Ask yourself this: If someone said "oh man I really like pokemon games what are some other games that play very similarly" would you recommend them Final Fantasy or Temtem?.
Also I'd like you to think about if it would be useful to define Dark Souls as a JRPG in the same way

My hottest take on this is that there are JRPGs that are not made in Japan

I don’t really think it’s the same as like FF or DQ but is it not technically a JRPG

I think it is but its like the McDonalds of JRPGs if that makes sense. IDK maybe I'm stupid

I call it the gamer’s first jrpg, not that it’s bad or anything but it’s definitely quite simple compared to the much “truer” rpgs

For the people saying that it's technically a jrpg because it's a Japanese rpg, yes you're technically right. But by that logic so many games can be described as RPGs because it's a game in which you role play. Phoenix Wright would also be a jrpg.

I get what you're saying but many JRPGs are pretty different from the typical ones like Dark Souls and others so why wouldn't Pokemon be considered one? It's not a game genre, the genre is RPG, which Pokemon definitely is one, and it's definitely Japanese so... JRPG

The term RPG is very broad and applies to all kinds of different games. Pokemon is a JRPG in every sense of the term

I disagree slightly but I agree in principle
JRPGs (and rpgs in general) are such a wide genre that encompass so many types of games that the label by itself isn't super useful
half of all dungeon crawlers, roguelikes, etc. are RPGs

I also agree that defining a genre based on where a game is made is really stupid lol, but I haven't really seen any good alternatives
like even "CRPG" is a really stupid term, I think "SRPG" is the only one that tells you anything about the game itself

I mean, it has level-based progression, turn-based combat, and has a cartoon art style reminiscent of anime/manga.
On top of being a role playing game made by a Japanese developer.
It's a monster catching game, but also a JRPG.

Monster collector RPGs made in Japan are still jrpgs. It's the same as how any animation made in Japan is anime and no animation anywhere else is anime

there are jrpgs that arent even turn/atb based but somehow pokemon is a different genre than final fantasy 3? unless the only defining trait of jrpgs is that your whole party attacks at once i dont see how pokemon is so different that it doesnt count

Except the entire party doesn't need to attack at once to count a JRPG as a JRPG. FFX and FFXII both let you swap teammates out mid-battle, so the entire party isn't attacking. it's not too dissimilar from duo/trio battles in pokemon.

rpg is a really bad category for games because it ranges from final fantasy tactics to assassins creed. I think PC is right that when we traditionally think of jrpgs we do not think of pokemon. If you have to say it ‘technically’ fits the requirements you might need to rethink

Pokemon is literally like the Dragon Quest games but instead of humans, we use enslaved animals in battle
Mana is equivalent to PP, win battle to gain experience and level up, turn based combat, need to go to a special building to heal the party or use bought medicines

I get what you're saying but its still an rpg made in japan, so it's a jrpg by definition.
I just think "rpg" isn't a good description of a video game genre bc almost every video game is role-playing. thats kinda the whole point
