22. 22. It's strange, but artists got away with far more gender-bending in the 1980s than nowadays. I think one reason for this is because the '80s were somewhat of a comparatively innocent time. Also, because society in general tends to let their artists get away with more fluffy poofterishness than the common person on the street (the straight hair-bands of the '80s, anyone?). Society tends to allow their artists greater levels of freedom and self-expression. In a real sense, uptight mainstream culture lives vicariously through its artists. This is true even of, say, country music, such as with Hank Williams, Sr. Society almost wants and expects its artists to be bad boys and girls. The reason why this is is because the average person has to keep a tight ship. They have a workaday job, and their boss isn't going to be too impressed if they don't show up on time. Nor is their boss or their coworkers going to be much impressed with them if they start expressing themselves as the unique, individual flower that they are. So society actually in a real way needs this release-valve with boundary-pushing artists, as that allows the common man or woman to live their expressive fantasies in the life of others.
