For my generation, the world view and visuals remind me of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's "Cyber City OEDO 808".

Cyber City OEDO 808
thank u Kojima for random show recommendation
What does he mean with the "the anime industry get's consumed by the West" part? Genuinely curious
The term used was "overseas", not West.
Roughly speaking, the overseas market for anime has grown by 650% over the last decade, and recently overtook the domestic market in size. That's important: it means that in a very meaningful sense, anime made in Japan is now made for foreign consumption. That creates an incredibly strong urge to pander to the overseas market, most notably China and the US. This creates a pressure to appeal to the lowest common denominator, in the way that the American Transformers movies and MCU try to adjust their values to fit the Chinese market.
Besides consumption, the whole world routinely uses Japanese studios to produce their shows, most notably China, Europe, and Latin America. China would be even more important except Chinese markets are very restricted and advantages their domestic studios. The US is actually one of the least important markets to Japanese animation studios largely because US animation studios are themselves large players and have a distinct non-anime style. So the Japanese animation industry is enormously concerned with overseas interests both in production and consumption.
For instance, both the US and Chinese markets are considerably more censored than Japanese markets. Even without outright censorship in the United States studios will strive to arrive at a G, PG, or PG-13 rating for various markets; a children's movie getting a PG-13 rating has failed from the get-go. And Chinese censorship is among the strictest in the world. Depiction of sex most audiences wouldn't even notice gets you the banhammer from Chinese government censorship. And you're straight fucked if you criticize the Chinese government in any way or even Chinese culture. Think about how many movies used Russians as villains in the 70s/80s/90s. And the extreme fetishization of Japanese society. Now think about how many movies today use the Chinese as villains despite them being the main rival to American dominance.
In general, Japanese media and anime in particular is often considered the height of weird by foreign audiences; Kojima is a prime example where there are endless memes about him and he's widely recognized for his avant-garde material and auteur status. That weirdness is simply diluted when market forces and direct censorship are applied.
There's also been a spread of anime studios outside of Japan and lower budget productions will frequently turn to them. This means that even with the expansion of anime in general, these are desperate times for Japanese anime studios - an industry-wide depression both mental and economic. Beyond that, COVID happened which shrank the domestic market by 10% and that's a lot of tightened belts and lost jobs. Also while people still watch anime, COVID resulted in a cataclysmic shift from watching broadcast TV to streaming TV in Japan. For the consumer this doesn't mean a ton, but for artists and producers, any number of contractual terms have drastically affected $$$ distribution. Basically the Scarlet Johansson/Disney furball writ large.
tl;dr Kojima thinks bland anime is caused by pandering to overseas market, but Edgerunner is a return to form with Japan showing the world it's still got it
Recently Japanese people are getting very upset that anime is becoming more sanitized and sterile natively due to western influence, "American values"/Political Correctness/"wokeism" take your pick and several creators and studios got the Twitter mob harassment treatment or their works being dropped early or changed due to disagreeable content contained in it by localization staff ala 'Interspecies Reviewers' which was dropped due to naughty sexual content and 'I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend into a Girl', where the localizers changed a crossdresser into a trans person to promote their personal ideology. The latter manga controversy made it to the studio that licensed it out and they stepped in to fix the situation and keep the mangaka's artistic vision. As to why the Japanese are surprised is beyond me, American studios have always censored or changed things they found undesirable or controversial to the point Miyazaki sent a sword to Cartoon Networks CEO with a note saying "NO cuts" when they were going to censor Princess Mononoke in 2006 or censoring Full Metal Alchemists pseudo crucifixion in the manga or Neji's manji head tattoo in Naruto.
Yeah I'm curious about this as well, maybe it has to do with Netflix or Crunchyroll getting distro rights? Or it could be perhaps Western animation (I.e. Arcane) is making anime less popular.
The Japanese probably aren't happy seeing Japanese studios working on western properties.
For a sec, i thought Kojima scored the show 1 out of 2, which is a really weird scoring system
Is that not what he meant?
I mean, I think he's a pretty weird guy. He was the one behind the Metal Gear series after all.
Because, as we all know, Kojima famously never does anything weird
Can confirm, watching this Series in One Setting is so fricking fullfilling.
Every moment of hope, love and happiness is like a fluke, a second away of disappearing.
A high paced rollercoaster of Emotions, fitting for Night City.
Cyberciry Odeo 808 is freely available om YouTube. It's a great mini series.
Always loved CyberCity Oedo 808. It's aged well, considering its actually really old now.
Why are legends around the world feeding me copium for season 2....
Stoooooooooooooop
If prevalent Japanese minds like Kojima are praising a show, it’s even more reasons to do more Edgerunners content
recent domestic anime situation
I thought it was falling off too. I was worried I was just getting old and out of touch.
What does he mean "famous anime studio consumed by oversea market"?
That oversea capital are flowing in these anime studio to force them to make contents tailored toward global markets?
Well that tends to happen if you can not make good content to grab the pie of oversea anime market on you own........
That's Japan in a nutshell. They do not like foreigners interfering in what they think is theirs.
Well... I as a pole i can say that our influence over media is quite small and that is probobly why the communication and influence went both ways...there were some polish songs in background in some scenes, im not big fan of those but it was quite fun experience to have when you pick up polish words in background when watching anime with english dubbing.
First i was like , hell no , i wont watch anime .. and after watching first part i wanted see second third.. and it was awesome, i want season 2 and other spin offs
I’m not really sure what half of this poorly translated tweet is trying to say but I’m glad he liked it
He's tryna make a pun because the animation studio is called Trigger.
The only negative thing that stood out to me was the holocall dialogue. It is weirdly written and performed. The characters speak like new actors who repeat words in order to feign nervousness and thoughtfulness. It is the only place where that kind of thing happens in the entire season.
I noticed the same thing. I think the English in the holo calls was probably translated by someone on the production team at Trigger, and the English dub decided to just use it as the script word for word.
Yeah I was really confused why they would randomly start talking like Skaven from Warhammer.
I think i've missed something because i think the show is cool but nothing close to a "masterpiece" as some would say.
I like the show tho but there have been so many animation masterpieces over the last decade that i don't felt engaged so much with edgerunner so if anybody could explain me why they think it's a "masterpiece" that'd be cool
I personally think its a masterpiece, but I generally dont like anime at all. For me it was perfect because it didnt have too much over the top anime stuff. Only Rebecca and her brother reminded me of the usual crazy anime personalities. But they were infrequent comedic relief so it wasnt too bad.
Plus the world made sense to me, how everything works, the lore, etc etc. And the lighting in any cyberpunk themed media is always amazingly vibrant and colorful against the dark and cold background of a scifi city. Plus I just cant stop thinking about that depressing ass ending. Not too often there's a show where nobody has a happy ending.
Sidenote: if ya'll know anymore anime thats a bit less over the top I would appreciate recommendations.
I agree, the show's good but it plays everything pretty safe. David and Lucy are both pretty stock characters, and for as much of a role it plays in the show, cyberpsychosis is pretty underwritten. It feels like a really good version of something like the Halo Legends animations instead of a full-fledged Cyberpunk tv show if that makes sense.
I love that he loves Cyber City Oedo 808.
Only 3 episodes, some of the greatest cyberpunk content of all time! Watch the UK English dub if you do, they curse and talk mad shit to each other and it just adds to the whole thing
Does David have his own drink at the afterlife? I feel like he deserves one if he doesn’t. Whole squad does.
Cyber city oedo 808!! Loved it so much, old anime but I highly recommend to watch it if you love cyberpunk and 90's anime, also eng dub is surprisingly good
For me it can't really beat some of the 'classics' like Evangelion, death note, etc. but god dam was that a good anime. It's rare you see newer shows like this compete in the 'big leagues' or whatever anyone wants to call it. thoroughly enjoyed my watch-through. 8/10
His call out to Cyber City is funny because, clearly Kawajiri and Kojima were on the same page as Pondsmith, drawing influences from Bladerunner and preceding literary cyberpunk fiction for their respective work. So Cybercity was probably influenced by Kojima as well.
Bladerunner -1982
Snatcher - 1988
Pen & Paper Cyberpunk - 1988
Akira - 1988
Cyber City - 1991
i upvoted this just thinking it was a random users post complimenting the anime and thought it was really nice until i read the comments and realized it was none other than Kojima raving about it. love the appreciation trigger and the show runners are getting
I don’t watch anime at all but I watched edgerunners and loved it, started my second watch through in English after watching in Japanese the first time
peeps at NBGO about to drop a hot theory that Kojima was the secret real screenwriter/showrunner for Edgerunners and/or that Mike Pondsmith and Kojima are in fact the same person.
I didn't understand the comment cyberpunk edgerunners is the most western anime of the decade hahaha
Well, he a director, producer, story writer and sometimes write song lyrics, there are few like that and I personally respect all their work.
The thing about Kojima is that he is always trying new ideas and make something different, like it or not it depends on you.
Hes objectively one of the most important videogame creators in history.
While I might agree that Death Stranding is not for everyone, Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic and beloved franchises.
His games are proof that games can be an art form and not just another way to earn more money through micro transactions.
That and he’s famous for having a voice/style in his games that’s consistent and for being super involved in directing games I believe.
1/2 means this tweet is the first tweet of two connected tweets.
The studio was announced aince the series was announced, and trigger are very renown in the business
Tbh Trigger never fails to deliver even their worst series are astonishing in regards of art.
