Vimeo notified me and said I'm in the top 1% of their high bandwidth consuming users. They're forcing me to upgrade my account from a $900/year Premium plan to a $3000/year Custom Plan. I have one week to comply or they will nuke my account lmfao Dying platform continues to die

Reasons I still use Vimeo: - Redundancy in case YouTube goes down - Better playback for some - Better privacy control - The entire hate5six backend was built around Vimeo's API back in 2008. Decoupling it means rewriting a few thousand lines of code. A project for another day.

Anyway, Vimeo claims they project my estimated bandwidth usage to be 30,000 GB for 2022. I called bullshit and ran my own analysis using raw data. I got them to give me bandwidth data for the last 2 years. I fired up a Python Jupyter notebook and loaded it via Pandas

Next, I grouped the data by month, giving me total bandwidth across all videos within a given month. Here are the first 5 rows

Then I looked at the distribution of monthly bandwidth usage. Seems like in the past 2 years I typically consume around 500 GB per month, but there's also a second peak around 1500 GB, and a tail of months exceeding 2000GB. I thought that was interesting.

I drilled down further and noticed this. A 4x increase in traffic between June 2021 and July 2021. It checks out. July is when shows came back and I started filming/releasing brand new sets. People were fiending for new show content.

I then computed the mean and standard deviation of my monthly bandwidth usage for the last two years. My average bandwidth rate is 1318 GB per year with a standard deviation of 829 GB. I used that to estimate a range for my 2022 usage: 16K-26K GB

Even if we just look at the last 6 months of 2021 and take average monthly bandwidth and multiply that by 12 (full year) then my estimated usage is about 21,000 GB.

I estimate around 84% of channel traffic is on YouTube vs 16% on Vimeo. Average watch time for all hate5six videos is 4.75 minutes. Idk just seems like a bad sign for a platform if THAT of all things puts me in the top 1%.

What does hate5six have in common with Channel 5, , and others? We are all creators who had our video content held hostage by for thousands of dollars over a couple hundred views. Thank you to . theverge.com/2022/3/15/2297 Die Vimeo.

I am living for “I had them give me the bandwidth data.” I bet they’d never gotten that one before and I take joy in imagining the convo between billing/sales and engineering 😂

lol for us Vimeo calculated we would use 60,000 GB a year and wanted $4700 annually. Our weekly videos average 600-800 views. Bunch of fucking crooks all my homies hate Vimeo
