As he began developing the project, Jones set out to play with the boundaries between fact and fiction from the get-go. Thus, SEE HOW THEY RUN makes reference in its plot to a fact of real life. In the story, arrogant American director Leo Köpernick (Brody), blacklisted from Hollywood, gets the rights to adapt Christie's The Mousetrap for the big screen. However, anticipating any contingency, the shrewd queen of mystery (Shirley Henderson) has inserted a condition into the contract: the producers cannot shoot the film until six months after the work has been withdrawn from the poster.
Researching for the film, Jones sought out the rights to the play and discovered why it had never been made into a movie. A successful producer at the time, Oscar® winner John Woolf, who produced The African Queen, Day of the Jackal, and Olivier!, had obtained the rights. Explains Jones, "There was a clause in the contract that said, 'the film can only be shot six months after the theatrical version has been taken off the bill,' and of course the play never stopped running. It occurred to me that we could do a mystery story, and sabotage the mystery story of the play,” says Jones.
Building on that fact-inspired premise, Jones brought in screenwriter Mark Chappell to envision a murder mystery story that lived up to the genre and immediately resonated with audiences. “The wonderful thing about these kinds of mystery stories is that you feel like you know this world without having seen it.
