To the many Long Covid patients, as well as ME/CFS sufferers I talked with, and to so many with chronic conditions who feel abandoned and gaslit by the medical system: I'm sorry.
Yes, these conditions are complex, but our approach has too often been callous dismissal. Not okay.

I spent most of my summer researching our Long Covid response—I plan more pieces, an essay can only fit so much—and I cannot really find words to express how much I despaired on behalf of the many patients I talked with.
It's just not okay to abandon so many people like this.

And while some of what gets classified as Long Covid are indeed lingering issues that resolve, an aftermath not unheard of for other illnesses, there are A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH A DEBILITATING CHRONIC CONDITION and they need help, disability insurance, support and more NOW.

And our dreadful treatment of Long Covid patients, I believe, is a continuation of dismissal of many chronic conditions historically with versions of "in your head, dear".
Obviously, ME/CFS is a crucial example, but not just.
Multiple Sclerosis. Ulcers. The examples are many.

Re: article suggesting Long Covid is exaggerated (not going to link it), let me ask, would someone at the beginning of a career they worked half a decade for, paid for her education, employed at her dream news org, just stop working, unless absolutely debilitated by it? No.
