John Deere has repeatedly told regulators that farmers can't be trusted to repair their own equipment. This foundational work will pave the path for farmers to retake control of the equipment that they own. #RightToRepair

Maybe. There are actually low bandwidth LTE standards as well. Also, carriers are switching everything to LTE for increased spectral efficiency. If you only need old 2G bandwidth, they still want you on LTE because they can handle more customers.

Combine that with the number of GPS/SATNAV units being stolen off of units, who knows how much tech issues are costing the AG industry.

And yes, that is corn-themed Doom running on a John Deere touchscreen. really went all out for this. You can harvest corn to raise your health or go hunt down the piggies!

As we start to understand how John Deere built this, people are raising some very real concerns about GPL compliance. Deere has built a very profitable empire on the backs of open source software. Where are their contributions back to the community?

How is anyone surprised by this? You want to know what underpins anything? Look for what the cheapest standard was in the 5 years before it was released. Everything since then is just patched on most of the time.

Yep. When I was a technician in an air traffic control tower in the early 2010s, everything was on Windows 98. The logging system for our precision approach radar was on Window 95.

It's fine if it's not 100% secure, the main issues are mods, tweaks, fixes.. If there's a presentation that gets uploaded to the chan, I'll watch it for sure.

It is sick that car companies now are considering enabling stuff that is already on the car only for a monthly fee. Why! If you bought the car it should be yours!

So... This is where you decide what action you're capable of taking makes the system stronger. So... Do you elect for better tech, or do you fix what's broken?

Not being secure is a feature, not a bug. This means farmers can hack their devices to retain full ownership of them and there's bugger all John Deere can do.

You would be surprised at how many farmers are geeks, especially those who ran from the tech industry when it had us pulling our hair out.

The lifespan of farming equipment is up to 40 years. It is hard to find a software company that will provide patches for their code for that long.

And it appears to be farm themed. You’re holding a steering wheel instead of a gun and you’re in a wheat field.
