The fact I work somewhere in news that prioritizes disability coverage (& disabled writers) shouldn’t be “cool” or “unique” like so many ppl say. It just should be the standard for news orgs to care about the people most disproportionately impacted by the stories we’re covering.

“Dimes square” has zero cultural relevance outside maybe 2k people in nyc, but because those ppl are in media and the dimes square scene or whatever is so enmeshed in media, they get non stop coverage. It’s an entirely manufactured thing *by the media!*

i pitched so many covid-related stories in 2020/2021 from the perspective of disability and every single editor said no. one editor in particular? "that doesn't concern our readers." 61 million americans are disabled and counting.

As someone working in media who’s immunocompromised and medically vulnerable I really wish we as an industry hired more disabled writers and did more to center vulnerable people in our coverage, esp on COVID. What’s happening right now is so horrific on such a massive scale
