To the Editor:
Cart versus Car? Which has the best MPG? Like most new golf cart owners, I look forward to driving about The Villages in my fuel efficient golf cart rather than my gas-guzzling auto. However, I decided to measure my mileage assumptions. For this, I used two carts. Cart ‘A’, a 2010 EZ GO, 13 HP Kawasaki engine; Cart ‘B’, a 2014 Yamaha, new out of the showroom, fuel injected engine and a high-speed gear. For both carts the gas tank levels were marked at the onset of the test and then refilled to that same level, one quart at a time, measured to the nearest pint. Both carts ran for over 100 miles, within our speed limits. Miles included a mix of ‘road-way’ miles and golf course travel. Golf course miles conveyed two golf bags and two passengers. Gasoline at 87 octane was used in the test. The MPG results were surprisingly low: Cart A (EZ-GO): 29.75 mpg: Cart B (Yamaha): 31.60 mpg. So much for fuel efficiency!
