I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has supported this project over the past three and a half years. It has been an amazing opportunity and an experience that I won’t forget. After hundreds of hours of design and promotion, it's surreal that the campaign has come to an end.

My goal was to raise awareness in general for critically endangered species and to introduce the kākāpō to an audience that may otherwise have never known that it existed. By combining my passions for LEGO and wildlife I hoped to help facilitate and inspire wonder and respect for the natural world and the precious fauna that we share it with. I feel this was successful.

When I first started this project in 2018, the kākāpō population was 149 individuals. Thanks to the incredible efforts of Kākāpō Recovery, Ngāi tahu, the Department of Conservation, and the groups, organisations and volunteers that they work with, the population has grown and there are now 201 kākāpō (August 2021). As a thank you to these hard-working groups, I am donating part of my proceeds from sales to Kākāpō Recovery.

Your interest in the kākāpō and endangered species doesn't need to end here. The world has countless beautiful creatures, many of which are threatened with extinction. I implore you to take time to learn about some of these species and to consider how we can work together to improve the world for them, and for future generations. Chur.

Learn more about the kākāpō here:

What is a kākāpō?

The kākāpō (Strigops habroptila) is an iconic flightless, nocturnal parrot that is only found in New Zealand. It is critically endangered and currently has a population of just over 200 individuals.

About the design

I chose to design and build the kākāpō as I am passionate about New Zealand and its unique wildlife. It is my intention that this model will raise awareness for the kākāpō, as well as other endangered species from around the world.

The new and improved design is constructed from just over 1,000 bricks. The model is free-standing and completely flightless, just like a real kākāpō! It features rotatable and extendable wings, posable tail feathers, and also comes with a mini-build baby kākāpō.

By easily removing bricks from the top of the model, the kākāpō can also wear brick-built headwear. Included with the set are a party hat (to really get the party started!) and a fashionable top hat to don in the presence of more distinguished guests. Maybe you can come up with some fun accessories that the kākāpō can wear too?!

Great for both conservation and conversation:

Mate - "Hey bro, what's that thing?"

You - "LEGO kākāpō."

Mate - "Sweet as."

When and where can I get one?

The kākāpō will be available for pre-order here on BrickLink from the 1st July 2021. This is the only place that it will be available, and it must be in the first 5 of 8 projects to reach 3,000 pre-orders to go into production. Make sure to get your kākāpō here on the 1st July to secure your set and to ensure it becomes a reality!

You can contribute to kākāpō recovery and conservation by adopting your own kākāpō from Kākāpō Recovery.

Skraak!

@Admin_Russell I emailed and asked Lego customer service about my missing order (no tracking) and they refunded without notifying me first. I do wonder if they actually sent it in the first place. Very disappointing as I was very much looking forward to the set.

@Admin_Russell Mine was not the Kakapo (i was lucky and got it about 4 months ago) mine was with the great fishing boat which was also in the orders for this around of Kakapo's. I have talked to Lego (via chat and also had someone ring me) for hours about the shipment and how a number of bricklink ones went missing from the June shipment to AU and NZ, lego has just thrown their hands up said "we don't know". Really not overly happy and been told they won't tell me what has happen to the "missing" products/shipment because the tickets they log only last 2 weeks before they close them. Really awful service.

@jabz. I had the same with another order (great fishing boat). Sent late june, no tracking. Talked to Lego and it seems they have gone "missing" and they don't know if they will turn up as they can't even track them. Best to talk to lego and just get a refund as they also can't send another etc. I asked them to look into the "missing" products as i expect someone knows how much re-sell of these are and marked them sent and walked out of the warehouse with them. We are not the only ones, there are others in NZ and US reporting the same thing.

I placed my order from Auckland, New Zealand for the second batch of birds that is due to arrive this month of June 2022. I am starting to get worried as I have not received any confirmation or shipping emails updating me as to the whereabouts of my parcel. If it does not arrive this month as is expected, I will have to make a complaint and ask for my money back. Not happy with the poor customer service :(

I order 2 on Lego NZ/Aust - from day one - seems they never confirmed my order - from memory was confirmed when I made it . No notification what so ever My guess their silly website took orders - show them to be fine - then couldn't complete as maybe too many accepted at once . That's kind of fine - but a notification would go along way - thinking where is it - they person's birthday is coming up They took my credit card details etc And only to release a small amount to NZ home of the Kakapo - lots of us would of gifted them to overseas friends

Dang, got it last week but there was a part missing at step 3! Missing the Dark Tan Roof Tile 1x2 Inv. Built it anyway but he has a hole in his butt. Interestingly I got a completely unnecessary 1x4 Tan Tile not even used in this set. I thought some other parts were missing from Bag 6 but thankfully they were in bag 7. Wondering if anyone else has a hole in their butt? Or any other missing pieces?

The instructions are unclear around attaching the wings to the body. If the wings are falling off the model they have not been attached correctly. Before attaching the wings, extend them to a 90 degree angle. When attaching them to the body, apply pressure only to bricks that connect to the body, not the entire wing itself. Although I don't recommend it, you can dangle the model by one of its wings and they won't fall off. New Zealand orders have been charged today.

Just finished building the Kakapo (received about 2 weeks ago). It's a nice chunky bird and looks great, but the wings attach with only two studs so they can come off easily if you aren't careful when you position them. I recommend not attaching the wings until you finish building both of them, as the first wing will come off as you are finishing building the other side of the bird. Might have been better if they'd had us build the feet earlier, so the bird could rest on them as you complete the build. fyi, I found two not-major issues with the instructions: 1) parts for step 215 are in the next bag (in bag 7 instead of bag 6 - looks like a pagination issue with the instructions - they probably just put the bag 7 start one page/step too late). 2) parts for step 256 are in a much earlier bag (4 or 5?), but not used until bag 8 instructions.

I'm really disappointed with Lego now, I ordered in the 1st wave and after enquiring and receiving an email to say orders would be shipped to NZ on 15/3/22 this didn't happen and my order status was set to backorder. So I contacted them again and have been told it will now be 1st August. I'm really hoping they got that date wrong.

not very happy !! I and many new zealanders who were part of the ORIGINAL FIRST ROUND crowdfunders back in June/July 2021 that got this project off the ground are still waiting with our Kakapos on backorder. Very unfair that people that have ordered AFTER us already have their kakapo. No recognition or appreciation for the Kiwis that made this happen , its our bird and our designer and we have been treated like rubbish. I would have never been a part of this had I known my daughters 2021 christmas present would arrive so late into 2022!! It has put me off ever taking part in the design crowdfunding again.

So frustrated! Order my set Aug. 13 and got the email in December saying it would be shipping soon. It wasn’t sent so I contacted LEGO and they said that wasn’t the first round of preorders but could give me an estimated date. The status just says “in process”. It’s now mid February with no updates.

I've just finished building my kākāpō and wanted to thank the designer for a very fun build and a fantastic-looking model. It even has enough swooshability for my daughter to run around the house with it making it fly! Yes, I told her they're flightless birds - didn't make any difference. :-)

Thought I’d share my update to see if others have the same thing: I got an email this morning that told my order was going to ship, and just 12 hours later I got an email saying it’s out of stock and backordered. As someone who was part of the first wave of preorders, I’m very disappointed with Lego now, not this campaign or creator. I don’t even know if this means I’m now waiting for wave 2 shipments. If so, could that mean I’m taking away from someone there? Or possibly miss out again? It feels very messy in my opinion.

Just had this email from lego very disappointed it is taking so long In December, we sent an email to let you know your BrickLink Designer Program order was getting ready to ship. We wanted to clarify some info. Your order was placed on or after August 3rd when we made additional Round 1 sets available to pre-order. We made a mistake by not reminding you the sets you ordered in this second wave of pre-ordering wouldn’t start shipping until as late as June 2022. We’re sorry for not mentioning this and apologize if we’ve caused any confusion.

We're sorry about that. After Round 1 closes for pre-orders at the end of August, LEGO Customer Service will remove these charges and email you when that is done. So I saw this too late, didn't I... is there any hope of someone being able to get in on it this late?

@Howlabaloo it's a hold on the card. The payment will go back on the card in a few days, and the money will come out (minus the shipping fee if it charged you for it!) when the set ships

Hey guys, am a little confused as it says we won't be charged until the item has shipped but I have already been charged the full amount? Can anyone shed some light for me?

@Sadeness "the system is still adding shipping automatically" Why TLG wants to confuse it's customers with that? I saw in another thread that you were saying they aren't even sending confirmation emails. This is all just very confusing. What ever anyone says or how BL or TLG updates FAQ etc. "This has been mentioned by the designer as well" Easier would be to make the system actually work... I'm not even talking about the invisible region limits yet.

@stocco yes the shipping is free on all these sets, the problem is the system is still adding shipping automatically to orders because they are below the shipping threshold in different regions. As @wetfink said the shipping charge will manually adjusted, people are not being charged till the sets ship. There is plenty of time to remove the shipping charges. If you really don't want to wait ,call up Lego customer service, they can see in the system that its a Bricklink order, and remove the shipping charges.

Concerning shipping charges. FAQ: "My order has a shipping charge when you advertised free shipping. How can I get that removed? Some BrickLink Designer Program orders had a shipping charge applied by mistake. We're sorry about that. After Round 1 closes for pre-orders at the end of August, LEGO Customer Service will remove these charges and email you when that is done. You don’t need to contact LEGO Customer Service about this. If you selected express shipping, that is an optional extra charge that will not be removed." This has been mentioned by the designer as well.

"Best bet is to have another family member with a different credit card and different billing address place an Australia order on your behalf, and then cancel the German order. This is what customer service recommended I do to be sure of securing a set." I really don't understand why TLG can't fix it in their side and why the customer needs to do all kinds of tricks. Is the TLG shopping system so complex for the customer support?

"All these sets are above the free shipping threshhold" No they aren't in every country they ship to. The Sheriff's Safe is EUR 54.95 in Finland and the threshold for free shipping to Finland is 55€. It seems the FAQ "How much will shipping cost? Shipping costs will be FREE for all the countries we ship to." isn't taken care in BDP. I really don't understand how TLG can mess so many things in this program.

@ellapreece you will need to contact Lego and have them cancel your German order. You can do this by phone. You should in theory then be able to order from Australia. But it's a bit of a pain and might not work for you. I'm in the same boat, and even though my German order (from round 1) is cancelled, Lego still cancelled my NZ order saying I was over the limit. I've had to get customer service to log an appeal with the appeals team to investigate, which can take up to 24 hours. In the mean time, I don't have a Kakapo order as a back up. It seems using the same credit card triggered this, so even though it was across different accounts, they still pick up on it. Best bet is to have another family member with a different credit card and different billing address place an Australia order on your behalf, and then cancel the German order. This is what customer service recommended I do to be sure of securing a set.
