Whenever I read or hear "slim design", "streamlined", or similar in a smartphone advertisement or product description, my inner alarms go off. It just screams "planned obsolescence" and "sacrificed utility value" at me.
My closest guess is operating costs.
This update did not improve security, since no one used unlisting as a means of protecting private information in first place. It it an excuse that is just-so believable enough to the average user to not look foolish.

I suggest creating a comment archive site so at least the discussions are not lost.
I presume it is not difficult, since comments are just text.
As far as I can remember, VidMe still let users view video titles and view counts for months after shutdown.
