My wife’s very expensive printer just gave a message saying it had reached the end of its service life and proceeded to brick itself. Apparently she can pay to service it or buy a new one even though it was working fine. Outrageous!

Boy, me too. I was just thinking about owning music recordings and videos - a thing of the past. 21st century life is one big company store.

Jesus Christ this is a new bottom. What model is it, may I ask? Because I’m always looking for an excellent photo printer and Epson comes up often. I will make sure I and every photographer and even end user I know never buys one

SOP in modern tech circles. Mobile toys are the worst, but far from the only offenders.

I put an unauthorised, recycled ink cartridge in my Epson printer and it went on strike, telling me my replacement was why it wasn’t going to work any more.

HP printer bricked itself for us for dodgy ink. Is there a company that doesn't do this?

Pretty sure the heads are built into the printer on Epsons so it’s possible they need to be serviced.

My engine is built into my car, and it doesn't brick itself when I need an oil change.

HP is even worse now. They brick if you don't have a credit card on file.

Ink is wasted it prints as it involves periodic head cleaning with flushing. Epson's "brilliant" solution is that the ink goes into a foam pad at the base of the printer. When the printer predicts that the pad is fully saturated, it'll brick itself.

There may be a "secret" way to reset with a service program but you'd want to put in a fresh pad.
That's how it worked with the R340 that I had many years ago. One hack you could do is redirect the waste into a waste container.

This is insane what happened to your wife. I have an older model of an Epson printer, and this has never happened to me yet. Does this only effect the newer models? Or all Epson products?

It happens on older inkjet printers. It is possible to clean/wash the ink pad, and then obtain a software tool online that sends reset command.

My cheapo Canon is still going with off brand in cartridges.

If Canon was smart, it'd make this a selling point, no?

There was a big lawsuit a few yrs back won by a customer over this very thing.

What model was it? This is exceptionally uncharacteristic of the Epson printer line, especially the Ecotank line. There is this (epson.com/Support/wa00819) which involves putting thousands of pages through a printer, and it's kind of like a car with $200K miles on it.

The only time I've ever seen that was a printer that was bought used from a print production house that basically ran it 24x7 for 5 years as part of their business.

Does this fix it?

This happened to us and we found, fairly easy, instructions online how to reset it, and then to future proof redirected the waste ink into an empty-able tube. Two years later and it’s still cooking.

Was it complaining about the ink pads? This is an actual problem that can keep the printer from printing, since with full pads it can't clean itself without spraying ink everywhere, but on Epson's professional printers they're user-replacable as the "maintenance tank."

if you could find out how to reset the internal clock you would defeat it.

Still better than politicians.

The service pad is full. It is user-replaceable on most models. The printer is not bricked — it just needs maintenance. Call Epson for help.

The HP All in One B & W models have been workhorses. Paid $354 for one 10 years ago. It's still going strong.

My HP LaserJet 4 is still running flawlessly after ~25 years. What a workhorse! And no need for firmware updates.
