After his first successful venture of moving 2,500 cattle along the infamous Chisholm Trail, Adam Brite couldn’t resist the allure of a second drive. To prepare for his greatest and most dangerous prospect yet, Brite begins purchasing cattle at every possible opportunity he gets and searching for an able crew to aid him in the arduous journey from San Antonio to Dodge City. He recruits a diverse cast of characters all left penniless after the Civil War: Trail boss and veteran driver Joe Shipman; Alabama Moze, the cook; Hal Bender, a friendly brute; The Uvalde quintet, a strapping group all under the age of twenty; and Pan Handle Smith, a striking Texas outlaw who never sleeps.

From start to finish we follow cattle rancher Adam Brite as he puts together a crew of too few men to drive four thousand cattle from San Antonio to Dodge City. He fights rustlers, storms, Indians, rivers and loses some of his drovers along the way. He does pick up one though, but later finds this young pup of a drover is not the teenage boy he thinks he is. Great book. If you liked the old TV show Rawhide, you can almost imagine the scenes of the cattle battling the elements and the problems of everyday life and misfortune on the trail.

Zane Grey wrote in a slower, more authentic style than most western authors. Louie and the rest wrote faster-paced books with a lot of typecast characters. Zane takes his time, more like it probably happened in that time period. So, if you want to zip through a book, this one is not for you. This is not a book for me that I cannot put down. I came back to it over and over to finish. But I like his style...just have to slow down a bit when reading.

Of all the westerns that I have read, this is one of my favorites. It tells the story of a group of cowboys driving a huge herd of cattle from Texas to Dodge City. Unlike some books that just touch the surface of the trail drive, this entire book is about the trail drive. From flooded rivers to stampedes, from rustlers to terrible lightning storms they face it all. Youtt get to know the cowboys and feel their weariness and determination. A great book!

I really enjoyed reading this one. I’m not sure how long ago it was written, but it is a good story and well told. It does not meet today’s standards for political correctness so if that will bother you, best take a pass. For those who like westerns and Zane Grey, you’ll like this one. Great descriptions of the cattle drive and he does create what seems like a realistic vision of the plains and the hardships and lawlessness.

This was a very entertaining, good book. I loved learning about the work and life of a trail driver. It was a hard life filled with so much tragedy and good will. The actual mechanics and daily events on a trail drive was fascinating. I especially liked the young woman who desperately wanted to be a trail driver and a family. Great story!

I've always loved Zane Gray books and this story is one of his best.It was so hard to find a stopping place. His characters are so vividly described and full of action that they carry the reader along on the ride. A wonderful read.

A riveting representation of the trials of those who rode the Chisum trail.
Well worth reading just for the love story.

I love Zane Grey's novels, his characters, his descriptions of the land and action, and his plot development. Can't be beat for excellent romantic stories. Darnell Clevenger, author of the western Luke Fuller

good description of the hardships of the cattle drive

A bit romanticised . Although the descriptions of the hardships of the drive was well envisaged .The profit motives of these early westerners seemed to be their main aim in life.
