Troubleshooting - Sound

  • Audio Skips or "Pops"

    1. Are you using any accessories that didn't come with your GCN? Unlicensed products are not fully compatible and may not work correctly.
    2. Remove the Game Disc. Examine it for dirt or scratches. If dirty/scratched, clean the disc with a damp soft cloth and then reload the Game Disc, pressing down gently on the Game Disc until it locks on the center hub.
    3. Try another disc in your system. Be sure each disc has been examined and cleaned before inserting it. If the problem happens with only one game, see individual game disc troubleshooting.

  • Other Sound Problems

    1. Are you using any accessories that didn't come with your GCN? Unlicensed products are not fully compatible and may not work correctly.
    2. Many games have an option that controls one or more volume variables. These may have been set to maximum volume during the manufacturing or testing process. Consult the game manual for directions on how to adjust the settings. You can usually get to them by going into the Options screen.
    3. Check the sound option on the GCN Main Menu and ensure you have it set properly (stereo or mono).
    4. Check your system hookup connections and make sure they are firm and correct:

      • Stereo AV cable
Remove the plugs and reinsert them with a slight twisting motion. Make sure that you are plugging the yellow cable into the video input. Also ensure that your audio cables (red and/or white) are plugged into the audio input jacks on your TV or VCR. If you only have one audio input, and one plug is hanging, that will result in a loss of some game sounds. Either use a Y-adapter hookup (see diagram), or access the Main Menu and set the Sound option to Mono.

      • RF Switch/Modulator
Try switching both the TV and the RF Switch to either channel 3 or 4. Also, try disconnecting the antenna from the RF Switch.

      • Component Video Cable:

        1. The Component Video Cable only provides the video signal. Make sure you are using the audio plugs from the Stereo AV cable for the audio connections.
        2. Remove the audio plugs and reinsert them with a slight twisting motion.
        3. Ensure that your audio plugs (red and white from the Stereo AV cable) are plugged into the specific audio input jacks associated with the Component video inputs and that the yellow plug of the stereo AV cable is hanging, and not plugged in.

    5. Press the power button to turn OFF your system and remove the Game Disc. Reload the Game Disc, pressing down gently on the Game Disc until it locks on the center hub. Try another Game Disc. If the problem happens with only one game, see individual game disc troubleshooting.
    6. Some TVs or VCRs may have special Audio Inputs that don't allow the volume to be controlled by the TV. They are intended to be controlled by a different device, such as a home theater amplifier. Check your manual for the TV or VCR to see if this is the case for your unit.
    7. Some TV and VCRs have a small switch, usually found near the AV inputs, that is used to allow components to send sound out to the TV speakers. Check your manual for the TV or VCR to see if this is the case for your unit.
    8. There may be a problem in one of your hookup cables and not your system. Try purchasing a new connection cable (where to buy). You can also try borrowing the cable from a friend to see if it solves your problem before purchasing a new item.
