      Range Description

This species has an anti-equatorial distribution in the Western and Central Pacific. In the north, it occurs from Korea and Japan to Taiwan and the Hawaiian Islands (excluded from Hawaii Island). In the south, it occurs from eastern and western Australia, Lord Howe Island and New Caledonia. Its depth range is 1-140 metres (Mundy 2005).

      Description

This species is common and locally abundant throughout its range. It is frequently documented in seagrass habitats and intertidal pools in Australia and Korea, and occurs very frequently in museum records (Hair et al. 1994, Upston and Booth 2003, White et al. 2015, Kwun et al. 2017, Noh et al. 2017, FishNet2 database accessed October 2018).

      Habitat and Ecology

This benthopelagic species inhabits coastal and estuarine areas, and usually occurs in shallow water over rocky substrate. Juveniles can be found in intertidal rock pools, preferably larger and deeper ones, where they aggregate near the surface, or near algal or rock ledge cover, while sub-adults shift to offshore habitats (Carpenter and Niem 1999, White et al. 2015). Young individuals feed primarily on small crustaceans and algae (Randall 1985, Mundy 2005). The maximum length is 16 cm (White et al. 2015).
